Abstract:
A rack and pinion steering gear (10) comprises a housing (12). A yoke assembly (40) is in the housing (12) for at least partially supporting and guiding movement of a rack bar (34) relative to a pinion gear (26). The yoke assembly (40) comprises a yoke (42) and a plurality of rotatable members. The yoke (42)has a first end surface (48) and an axis (A) that extends transverse to the direction of movement of the rack bar (34). Each of the plurality of rotatable members is supported by the yoke (42). A portion of each rotatable member projects outward of the first end surface (48) of the yoke (42) for contacting the rack bar (34). Each rotatable member is rotatable about its axis and is fixed against movement along the yoke axis (A) relative to the yoke (42).
Abstract:
An apparatus for attachment to the body (240) of a vehicle (12) which has a front, rear and opposite sides and which has steerable wheels. The apparatus comprises a lower part (22) having structure (40, 48) for fixed attachment at each of the opposite sides of the vehicle. A first steering control arm (150) is pivotally connected to the lower part (22) at one side of the vehicle. A second steering control arm (160) is pivotally connected to the lower part (22) at an opposite side of the vehicle. An upper part (24) is connected with the lower part (22). A rack and pinion steering mechanism (10) includes a rack bar (180) movable axially in opposite directions to effect steering movement of the steerable wheels of the vehicle. The steering mechanism (10) includes a chamber (80) through which the rack bar (180) extends. The chamber is defined by surfaces of the upper and lower parts (22, 24).
Abstract:
An apparatus for steering a motor vehicle that includes a steering control device which rotates on an axis and is designed for operation by an occupant of the vehicle. the apparatus includes a transmission mechanism for translating the rotational movement of the steering control device into a movement of an elongate steering element arranged outside the axis of rotation of the steering control device. The apparatus also includes an elongate mount which defines the axis of rotation of the steering control and which is fastened to a fixed structure of the motor vehicle. The mount is configured to be shortened or tilt downward in the event of an impact by a vehicle occupant against the steering control device.
