Abstract: A production plant for producing nitric acid at reduced power, the system derived from a state-of-the art mono pressure nitric acid plant wherein the system further includes a first feature for splitting a tail gas stream into a first tail gas stream in fluid communication with an oxygen-rich gas and with compressed air and a second tail gas stream, and/or a second feature for splitting a tail gas stream into a third tail gas stream in fluid communication with an oxygen-rich gas and with compressed air and a fourth tail gas stream, a feature for pressurizing a gas downstream the absorption tower. The production plant allows for reduction of power by the air compressor. A method for operating the system, the use of the system for performing the method of the disclosure, and a method for revamping a state-of-the art mono pressure nitric acid plant into the system.

Abstract: Methods and systems for treating a gas stream comprising NOx are disclosed. In one embodiment of the method, the gas stream comprising NOx is reacted with ozone to form oxidation products including nitrogen sesquioxide and nitrogen pentoxide. At least a portion of the nitrogen sesquioxide and nitrogen pentoxide is reacted with water to form nitric acid, and a solubilized form of the nitric acid is collected and may be reused or otherwise utilized. Abstract: The electric fixation of nitrogen from air is enhanced and made more efficient by the simultaneous multiple use of the electric discharge for both reacting nitrogen and oxygen to nitric oxide and for generating other specific oxidizing agents for the further oxidation of nitric oxide to higher oxides in that this special cell thereby rapidly effects not only the oxidation of nitrogen to nitric oxide but also rapidly oxidizes that nitric oxide to higher oxides of nitrogen products and thereby provides a means for the rapid absorption of the fixed nitrogen products from the electric discharge zone where the discharge would otherwise destroy much of the same product nitrogen which it is generating. The rapidly soluble higher oxides of nitrogen are rapidly absorbed by and held in an aqueous solution of these products flowing within the cell and they are converted directly to nitric acid in the solution as it flows from the cell.

Abstract: There is described a process for the reconstitution of NO.sub.X gases produced by the thermal decomposition of metal nitrates to nitric acid comprising the steps of:1. contacting the NO.sub.X gases in counter-current relationship in one or more packed columns with cooled 50 to 60 percent nitric acid to remove as nitric acid a major portion of the originally introduced NO.sub.X values and provide an acid solution leaving the column having a temperature below about 180.degree. F. to remove as nitric acid a major portion of the originally introduced NO.sub.X values;2. compressing the residual gases from step 1 to from about 2 to about 6 atmospheres absolute;3. contacting the compressed gases from step 2 with from about 50 to about 60 percent nitric acid in a packed absorption column in counter-current relationship to remove substantially all of the remaining NO.sub.X values from the gas stream as HNO.sub.3 ; and4. recovering 50-60% nitric acid as it accumulates.
