A polymerization process for producing a copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and perfluorobutylethylene, prepared by an aqueous dispersion polymerization technique, and the resin produced thereby, are provided. This copolymer contains a relatively small amount, between about 0.02 weight percent and about 0.6 weight percent, of comonomer polymerization units. The copolymer is believed to be comprised of a core-shell structure wherein the polymerized comonomer units reside primarily within the core. The primary particle size of the copolymer ranges from 0.175 microns to and including 0.203 microns and the standard specific gravity is less than 2.143. This copolymer possesses a unique combination of very small particle size coupled with high molecular weight, a combination not heretofore achieved in tetra-fluoroethylene polymers of the dispersion or fine powder type. The process of this invention is characterized by permanganate initiation and the entire reaction is carried out in the absence of zinc chloride or other ionic strength enhancer. The addition of initiator must be stopped well before completion of the reaction, preferably at or before the mid-point of the complete reaction.

Compositions of specialty fluoroelastomers containing copolymerized units of tetrafluoroethylene, propylene, optionally vinylidene fluoride, and a cure site monomer selected from the group consisting of i) trifluoroethylene, ii) 3,3,3-trifluoropropene-1, iii) 1,2,3,3,3-pentafluoropropylene, iv) 1,1,3,3,3-pentafluoropropylene, and v) 2,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene are readily curable with polyhydroxy curing systems. The resulting cured articles have a combination of excellent resistance to alkaline fluids, superior tensile properties and compression set resistance.

The fluororesin can be firmly adhered directly to other materials such as resins, metals, glass, crystalline silicon, polycrystalline silicon and amorphous silicon, while maintaining characteristics such as chemical resistance, solvent resistance, non-tackiness, electrical insulation properties, stain-proofing properties and flame retardance. The fluororesin can also be molded at a lower temperature than conventional fluororesins, and thus can be heat bonded or co-extruded with general purpose resins having low heat resistance.

The invention also provides a fluorothermoplastic composition comprising interpolymerized units derived from about 94 to about 97 mol % TFE, about 0.75 to about 3 mol % PPVE, and about 1.5 to about 3.5 mol % HFP. These fluorothermoplastic compositions have a flex life that fits the equation: log(flex life cycles)≧0.71+4.0*(MFI(−0.294)), a method of making fluorothermoplastic compositions, a method of improving stress crack resistance, and fluorothermoplastic articles.

This modified polytetrafluoroethylene has good paste extrudability, and provides molded articles having good mechanical properties, in particular, pressure resistance.
