A polyurethane polymer includes at least one buffer selected to adjust pH to a pH within a desired range. The buffer compound is immobilized within the polymer, and the polymer has a buffer capacity in excess of 3 micromoles of acid or base per gram polymer. A polymer includes at least one enzyme that is selected to catalyze a reaction of a substance. The enzyme is immobilized within the polymer. The polymer also includes at least one buffer selected to adjust the pH in the vicinity of the enzyme to a pH within a desired range. The buffer compound is also immobilized within the polymer. The polymer preferably has enzyme activity and a buffer capacity in excess of 3 micromoles acid or base per gram polymer. In one embodiment, each of the enzyme(s) and the buffer(s) are covalently bonded to the polymer.

A modified annexin protein, preferably annexin V, is used to prevent thrombosis without increasing hemorrhage. Annexin binds to phosphatidylserine on the outer surface of cell membranes, thereby preventing binding of the prothrombinase complex necessary for thrombus formation. It does not, however, affect platelet aggregation necessary for hemostasis. The modified annexin molecule can be a homodimer of annexin, an annexin molecule coupled to one or more polyethylene glycol chains, or an annexin molecule coupled to another protein. By increasing the molecular weight of annexin, the modified annexin is made to remain in circulation for sufficient time to provide a sustained therapeutic effect.

Disclosed is a method for modifying naturally occuring biocompatible biopolymers of plant and animal origin by subjecting same to ionizing radiation in the presence of a mediating gas, typically acetylene to enable one to selectively enhance and modify one or more of the physiochemical propserties of the starting materials which have a wide range of uses in medicine, food technology and other industrial applications. Notwithstanding the modifications, the biocompatibility of the biopolymer remains unchanged and no new or additional functional groups are introduced into the starting biopolymer.

The invention relates to a component for producing thermoplastically moldable, biodegradable and bright polymer mixtures based on starch, with good dimensional stability in water. The dimensional stability in water and the biodegradability of said component are adjustable and the component can be used for producing sheet materials, semi-finished or finished products, for example for packagings, containers, articles required in horticultural nurseries, and for other purposes. The invention, furthermore, relates to a process for producing the component from polyvinyl acetate and alkali silicate. A suspension of polyvinyl acetate is hydrolized and saponified in the batch process in the presence of catalytic additions such as, in particular glycerol, by adding the alkali silicate and hydroxides at high temperatures. Organosilicates of high homogeneity and fineness are formed. Additions of said component in small amounts have a positive effect on the phase compatibility of the hydrophilic starch and a hydrophobic polymer such as polyvinyl acetate in the course of preparation of the blend in the extruder. The properties of the extruded products are substantially enhanced.

Disclosed is a hybrid protein-polysaccharide superabsorbent hydrogel. The hydrogel includes two interpenetrating matrices: a first matrix which is an acylated, cross-linked protein matrix, and a second matrix which is an anionic polysaccharide matrix. The two matrices can be non-cross-linked, or the hydrogel can further include bridging moieties that covalently cross-linking the acylated, cross-linked protein matrix to the anionic polysaccharide matrix.

The object of the present invention is an additive composition for paper making which is added to the pulp prior to web formation in order to increase the wet strength of the web. The basic component of the composition is a component made from starch, which to its molecular weight has been thinned to a viscosity level of 10 to 400 (5%, 60null C., Brookfield) which by solution cationizing using a quaternary nitrogen compound is cationized to a charge of

The invention disclosed herein relates to an improved process for making elastomeric polyisoprene articles. In particular, the process of the invention is a system which produces synthetic polyisoprene articles exhibiting tensile strength properties similar to that of solvent-based processes using natural rubber latex. The process comprises an accelerator composition at the pre-cure stage comprising a dithiocarbamate, a thiazole and a guanidine compound. In a preferred embodiment, the accelerator composition comprises zinc diethyldithiocarbamate (ZDEC), zinc 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (ZMBT) and diphenyl guanidine (DPG), in conjunction with a stabilizer, such as sodium caseinate. The invention also includes an elastomeric polyisoprene product made by the process, such as a surgeon's glove.
