A multi-zone-plug-flow-reactor is used to produce synthetic natural gas (SNG) by thermal hydrocracking. A vaporized hydrocarbon feed and a portion of the required hydrogen is fed downwardly through the reactor initially at 800* to 1,200*F and above 200 psig. The partially thermally hydrocracked hydrocarbon feed is stepwise quenched to maintain a temperature differential of 150*F maximum between each zone and the remainder of the hydrogen is mixed with the feed at various points within the reactor to complete the hydrocracking in the last zone and thereby provide a product which is quenched to a temperature at which no further hydrocracking will occur. The reactor product is cryogenically separated to provide recycle hydrogen, gas for hydrogen generation and the SNG product.

In the hydrotreating and steam reforming of an oxygen and sulfur bearing hydrocarbon fuel the oxygen is first removed in an oxidizer containing a bed of platinum catalyst, the inlet temperature being well below 1000.degree. F. and preferably on the order of 300.degree. F. The sulfur in the fuel does not harm the oxidizer catalyst and may be removed downstream by known hydrodesulfurization techniques prior to reforming.

Methane and carbon dioxide are produced by reacting steam with a carbonaceous feed material at a reaction temperature between about 1000.degree. F. and about 1500.degree. F. and a reaction pressure in excess of about 100 psia in the presence of a carbon-alkali metal catalyst and equilibrium quantities of added hydrogen and carbon monoxide. The raw product gas withdrawn from the reaction zone is treated for removal of the carbon dioxide, product methane is recovered from the treated gas, and the remaining hydrogen and carbon monoxide can be recycled to supply the added hydrogen and carbon monoxide needed in the reaction zone.

A process for the gasification of carbonaceous materials to produce a high B.T.U. gaseous product is disclosed. The process includes the partial oxidation of a fluid hydrocarbon to produce a gaseous mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen, followed by contacting the gaseous mixture with a relatively cool, finely-divided carbonaceous solid material. The resulting gas-solid mixture is then passed along with a carbonaceous feed into a high velocity transfer line reactor furnace, and the solid material is removed from the gas-solid mixture which emerges from the reactor furnace. The present invention is particularly well suited for the hydrogasification of high boiling, carbon-rich feedstocks such as reduced crude oils.

This invention relates to a process for the methanation of scrubbed raw gases containing a concentration of carbon monoxide in excess of 3 mole percent and a methane concentration of less than 25 mole percent which comprises reacting a part of the carbon monoxide contained in the raw gases in the presence of an effective amount of at least one steam reforming catalyst contained in a fixed bed, substantially adiabatic reactor with steam, water, or a steam and water mixture provided directly to the reaction zone to effect the shift conversion of a part of the carbon monoxide according to the equationCO + H.sub.2 O = C0.sub.2 + H.sub.2and simultaneously to effect methanation of the remaining carbon monoxide with hydrogen up to the equilibrium point of the equationCO + 3H.sub.2 = CH.sub.4 + H.sub.2 Othe amount of steam, water, or steam and water mixture being sufficient to maintain the temperature of the reactants below that at which cracking of the methane product in the methanation reaction can take place.

A partial combustion process wherein a substantial portion of the soot formed in the combustion reactor is separated from the crude gas, e.g., by hot cyclones, and burned in a separate combustion zone with an excess of oxygen, optionally in the presence of steam, to yield a hot gas containing oxygen, carbon dioxide and water. This hot gas product, dependent on the ash content of the hydrocarbon feed is then subject to an optional solids removal step prior to its introduction into the partial combustion reactor where the oxygen contained therein supplies at least a portion of the oxidant requirement for partial oxidation and the carbon dioxide and water present therein are substantially converted to carbon monoxide and hydrogen.
