Method for removing essentially all of the chemically bonded arsenic and antimony from copper sulfide ores. The arsenic and antimony are selectively leached out using Na2S in a basic solution. The resulting Na3AsS4 and Na3SbS4 are converted to the sulfides or to ferric arsenate and ferric antimonate for safe disposal. Sodium and sulfur values are recovered for recycling in the process.

METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR PRODUCING METALLIC ARSENIC BY REDUCING AN ARSENIC COMPOUND IN GAS PHASE WITH AMMONIA. THE METHOD COMPRISES SUSPENDING ARSENIC TROXIDE IN A STREAM OF AMMONIA AT A TEMPERATURE WHICH CAUSES DECOMPOSITION OF THE AMMONIA BY THE ARSENIC TRIOXIDE AND WHEREIN THE FORMED HYDROGEN REDUCES THE ARSENIC TRIOXIDE TO ELEMENTARY ARSENIC IN A HOMOGENEOUS GAS PHASE REACTION, WHEREAFTER THE GAS MIXTURE IS COOLED AND THE ARSENIC VAPOUR CONDENSED OUT TO CRYSTALLINIC ARSENIC. THE APPARATUS COMPRISES A FEED MEANS FROM WHICH A FINELY DIVIDED ARSENIC COMPOUND IDSTRIBUTED IN A STREAM OF AMMONIA IS METERED TO A REACTOR, WHERE SAID STREAM IS HOMOGENIZED BY VAPORISATION OF THE ARSENIC COMPOUND, A CONDENSER FOR CONDENSING FORMED ARSENIC IN ELEMENTARY CRYSTALLINIC FORM, AND A GAS CLEANING TOWER IN WHICH THE GAS IS CLEANSED OF RESIDUAL ARSENIC.

Disclosed is a method for the recovery and purification of arsenic/selenium alloys which are contaminated with organic and inorganic materials. The method comprises: A. dissolving the alloy in an aqueous solution of morpholine, piperidine or a lower aliphatic primary or secondary amine which is a solvent for the alloy but a non-solvent for the contaminants therein, B. physically separating the resulting alloy solution from the undissolved contaminants, and C. evaporating the alloy solution to dryness to recover the alloy.

The oxides of IV B are reduced to their metallic state by first introducing the ore into a liquid containing phosphoric acid, zinc oxide and water. The solution is mixed and calcium carbonate is added. After removal of particles held in suspension by decanting, settling, and returning the solution to the original container, the mixture is brought to a boil. Most of the volatiles are removed by boiling and sodium bicarbonate is added to the mixture, along with water. After the reaction has gone to completion, the solution is again decanted and the remaining material is leached and rinsed, following which it is smelted to the base metal.
