Abstract: Disclosed herein are systems and methods for automating a start of a pump-down operations that adjusts a pump rate and a winch speed. The methods include lowering a tool string into a wellbore via a wireline controlled by a winch unit and a pump unit, measuring at least one measurement parameter, calculating a range of wireline tension references for the winch unit from at least inputs comprising at least one user configuration parameter and the at least one measurement parameters, and a range of wireline tension references for the pump unit from at least inputs comprising at least one user configuration parameter and the at least one measurement parameters, generating a tension error signal when the measured tension of the wireline deviates from at least one of the calculated ranges of wireline tension references, and adjusting the lowering of the downhole tool string in response to the tension error signal.

Abstract: A control system for a pressure management apparatus (PMA) of a drilling system has an onsite device in close proximity to and in communication with the PMA and an offsite device at a remote location. Both the onsite and offsite devices are connected to a network, such as the Internet, through which the devices can communicate with one another. The onsite device receives data in real-time from the PMA and the offsite device can access the data in real-time via the network. The offsite device can generate a command based on the data or user input at the offsite device and send the command to the onsite device to modify one or more settings of the PMA. A control panel is displayed on the user interface of the offsite device to allow an operator to remotely control the PMA.

The control system may include a memory accessible to the processor and storing instructions executable by the processor for: during slide drilling, detecting an increase to a first differential pressure (ΔP) that is greater than a first threshold pressure. In at least one embodiment, the control system may responsive to the first ΔP exceeding the first threshold pressure for less than a first threshold time, continuing the slide drilling without modifying a drilling parameter.

The logging data may be collected from downhole sensors or may be recorded by a control system used for drilling. A computer implemented method may enable industrial scale automated filtering and normalization of logging data, including calibration to a known standard. In particular, the filtering and normalization may be used for stratigraphic analysis to correlate true vertical depth to measured depth along a wellbore.

Abstract: A managed pressure drilling (MPD) manifold has one or more valves that are operable by one or more actuators configured to synchronize the opening of one or more passageways in the valves with the closing of one or more of the other passageways in the valves, in order to minimize the likelihood of error and reduce response time. The valves are configured to transition smoothly between positions without fully blocking fluid flow in the manifold while changing the flow direction. The synchronization may be achieved mechanically, electrically, hydraulic, and/or pneumatically. The actuators may be remotely controlled by a control unit having a processor and control logic software, based on data collected by one or more sensors in the MPD manifold. The positions of the valves of the MPD manifold may be automatically adjusted by the control unit via the actuators.

Abstract: A method for wellbore construction management includes measuring at least one drilling operating parameter during drilling of a wellbore. At least one well state parameter is calculated from the measured drilling operating parameter. A difference between the calculated well state parameter and a predetermined value of the well state parameter is determined. When the difference exceeds a selected threshold a modified well plan is calculated comprising at least one drilling task to enable construction of at least part of the wellbore to conform to the modified well plan. The at least one drilling task is displayed to a user.

Abstract: An apparatus for, and method of identifying a potential problem with a bottom hole assembly (“BHA”) combination that is used in a drilling operation. The method includes monitoring, using a sensor, an actual drilling parameter; comparing the actual drilling parameter to a target drilling parameter to determine a deviation; creating, in response to the deviation and by a feedback control loop system that references an electronic database, instructions thereby omitting variability associated with human input in creating the instructions; monitoring, using the controller, a change in the deviation; determining that the change in the deviation is below a threshold; and determining, based on the change in the deviation being below the threshold, that there is a potential problem with the BHA combination. The BHA combination comprises a mud motor and a drill bit.
