An articulated, modular, track-mounted, self-propelled, remote-controlled drilling apparatus is demountable into several heli-transportable components, including a drilling module and a drill support module, plus separate hydraulically-driven track carriages on which they are removably mountable. The track carriages are demountably coupled in tandem by a tri-axially articulated hitch mechanism incorporating a track steering mechanism. The drilling module carries a rotary drill, a hydraulic pump operatively connected to the track drive mechanisms, and a primary motor, which selectively drives either the drill or the pump. The use of multiple demountable modules reduces the weight of the components to be heli-transported, thus allowing the use of smaller and more economical helicopters. The combination of self-propelled, track-mounted modules with tri-axial articulation and remote controllability enables the assembled apparatus to operate more easily over rough terrain than known seismic drills, reducing or eliminating the need for separate means for transporting the apparatus between borehole locations.

Mounted to the front of each cab is a drilling assembly including a rectilinear positioning device for drill pods which provides up-down and side-to-side movement of the drill pod in front of the cab. Assuming equal angular separation between successive positions, the drilling mechanism may conveniently bore a multitude of equally distanced mine roof holes for accepting conventional roof bolts and supporting the roof without dislocative movement of the apparatus. A horizontal deck extends forwardly from a self-propelled body portion. An elevating mechanism pivotally connects the deck to the body portion for vertical movement of the deck into and out of position on the mine floor. A mast-type roof drilling unit is mounted on the front of the deck and includes a vertically movable drill pot for advancing a rotating drill rod into the mine roof for drilling a bore hole therein. The deck is positioned on the mine floor during the drilling operation. During tramming of the body portion the deck is raised to an elevated position above the mine floor. A roof support assembly is supported by telescoping devices above the deck to provide overhead protection for the machine operator during the drilling and tramming operations. During drilling the roof support assembly is raised to abut the mine roof and support the mine roof above the operator on the deck. To facilitate tramming the body portion, the deck is lowered from the mine roof a sufficient distance to permit raising the deck from the mine floor.

The object of the invention is a system for automatically setting the angles of the guide seating structure of a rock drilling machine or the rammer of a pile driver, or a similar tool arranged for a reciprocating movement on said structure carried by a movable support and for moving the structure parallel to itself so that the angle of the structure is maintained. The structure is pivotally mounted in two substantially vertical orthogonal planes and is connected to the movable support by a movable intermediate arm provided with drive means such as jacks for pivoting movements of the structure in said two planes. Transducers are mechanically coupled to the drive means to transmit electrical signals representing angles to a comparator in response to the attitude of the guide seating structure, the intermediate arm and the seating structure to adjust the seating structure to a specific bearing and a specific angle, in said two planes, in relation to the vertical, the bearing and the specific angle being automatically maintained when said movable support carrying the guide seating structure is moved to another place even on a terrain of varying slope so that a further hole may be drilled or a further pile may be driven exactly parallel to a preceding one.
