Abstract: A series tailored athermally stabilized optical (STASO) telescope system (STASOS) and method (STASOM) is disclosed. The disclosed system/method separates an optical mirror source (OMS) and an optical focal target (OFT) via a first metering rod (FMR), second metering rod (SMR), and third metering rod (TMR) where the FMR, SMR, and TMR each comprise a first retaining rod (FRR) comprised of a material having a first thermal expansion (FTE) coefficient and a second retaining rod (SRR) comprised of a material having a second thermal expansion (STE) coefficient. The FMR, SMR, and TMR are constructed so as to be athermally stabilized to ensure that the OMS and OFT remain separated at a constant or controlled distance over a predetermined temperature range by selection of appropriate FTE and STE coefficients.

Abstract: A series tailored athermally stabilized optical (STASO) telescope system (STASOS) and method (STASOM) is disclosed. The disclosed system/method separates an optical mirror source (OMS) and an optical focal target (OFT) via a series connection of a first metering tube (FMT) and a second metering tube (SMT) that have been selected to have complementary thermal expansion characteristics so as to keep the OMS and OFT at a predetermined optical focal distance (OFD) from one another. This OFD may constitute a static distance and/or may incorporate a positive and/or negative expansion with temperature that complements thermal characteristics of the OMS and/or OFT so as to stabilize the OFD between the OMS and OFT over a predetermined range of temperatures.

Abstract: An expandable washer for use with a fastener to maintain tension in the fastener after connection to a component comprises first and second disks. The first and second disks cooperatively define a channel having a dimension parallel to the expansion axis which decreases from a location remote from to a location closer to the expansion axis. The first and second disks are configured to pass the fastener through them and to the component. The fastener operatively engages the first disk for moving with the first disk and to place the fastener in tension when the fastener is connected to the component. The expandable washer further includes a cam located radially outward from the expansion axis and biased for movement toward the expansion axis to drive the first and second disks apart to maintain the application of force against the fastener.

Abstract: A hydraulic tensioning and release tool for an expansion fastener of a type having an elongate member with a tapered portion for fastening a workpiece. The tool includes a sleeve for placement about the tapered portion; a cylinder(s) including a cylinder for generating compressive force against the workpiece; a release piston for displacing the sleeve and a tension piston for coupling to elongate member. The tension piston and the cylinder(s) defining a tension chamber and the release piston. One of cylinder(s) defines at least one release chamber. Hydraulic ports are in fluid communication with the tension chamber and the release chamber for application of hydraulic pressure to displace the tension piston and the release piston for respectively tensioning the elongate member and for releasing the sleeve from the tapered portion. A tension retaining arrangement retains the elongate member in tension subsequent to removal of hydraulic pressure from the tensioning chamber.

Abstract: Systems and methods can include stretching a stud of a hammer assembly by tightening, according to a preset amount, a plurality of fasteners, which can extend from a first end surface and/or a second end surface of a first nut threadedly coupled to the stud, against an upper surface of a body of the hammer assembly. The fasteners and the first nut can provide a clamping load for the stud upon completion of the tightening. The systems and methods can also include, after the stretching, tightening a second nut, which can be threadedly connected to the stud, toward a seat formed in the body of the hammer assembly; and further tightening the second nut, against the seat. The systems and methods can further include transferring the clamping load from the fasteners and first nut to the second nut.

Abstract: The present disclosure relates to fastening collars, multi-piece fasteners, and methods for fastening. A fastening collar comprises a first collar end, a second collar end, and an elongate portion intermediate the first collar end and the second collar end and defining a longitudinal axis of the fastening collar. The elongate portion comprises a first region adjacent the first collar end, extending a first distance along the longitudinal axis; a second region adjacent to the second collar end, extending a second distance along the longitudinal axis, and comprising a flange; and an inner collar surface defining collar cavity extending through the elongate portion from the first collar end to the second collar end. The second collar end extends away from the longitudinal axis of the elongate portion at a first angle offset from an angle perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the elongate portion.

Abstract: A bolt includes a shank having a first end, a second end, a first external thread proximate to the first end, and a second external thread proximate to the second end. The first external thread twists in a first direction, the second external thread twists in a second direction, and the first direction is different from the second direction. The first external thread includes a minor diameter, the second external thread includes a major diameter, and the minor diameter of the first external thread is greater than the major diameter of the second external thread.

Abstract: A thermally stabilized fastener system and method is disclosed. The disclosed system/method integrates a fastener (FAS) incorporating a faster retention head (FRH), fastener retention body (FRB), and fastener retention tip (FRT) to couple a mechanical member stack (MMS) in a thermally stabilized fashion using a fastener retention receiver (FRR). The MMS includes a temperature compensating member (TCM), a first retention member (FRM), and an optional second retention member (SRM). The TCM is constructed using a tailored thermal expansion coefficient (TTC) that permits the TCM to compensate for the thermal expansion characteristics of the FAS, FRM, and SRM such that the force applied by the FRH and FRR portions of the FAS to the MMS is tailored to a specific temperature force profile (TFP) over changes in MMS/FAS temperature. The TCM may be selected with a TTC to achieve a uniform TFP over changes in MMS/FAS temperature.
