A magnetic friction device for transmitting torque from one to the other of spaced apart, relatively rotatable, axially aligned members. One of the members carries a circular band of friction material concentric with the axis of rotation of the member. Cooperating therewith, carried by the other member, are a plurality of axially movable segments or planets, each having a flat face adapted to engage the face of the circular band of friction material. Additionally, the planets may be rotatably journaled in said other member and so disposed relative to the band of friction material that engagement therewith and relative rotation of the members causes each planet to rotate about its axis. Each planet is axially moved into engagement with the band of friction material by a controlable magnetic force applied to all of the planets to thereby transmit torque from one member to the other.

An electromagnetic clutch includes a first rotatable member rotatably supported on a first bearing. The first rotatable member is provided with at least one annular groove along an outer surface thereof for receiving a belt rotatably connecting the first rotatable member to an external driving source. The first rotatable member further has an inner and outer cylindrical annular portions and a magnetic axial end plate connecting the cylindrical annular portions at an axial one end. The magnetic axial end plate has a plurality of arcuate slits disposed on at least one circle. A plurality of remaining regions are located between each pair of adjacent slits. A second rotatable member is rotatably supported on a second bearing. An annular magnetic member is supported on the second rotatable member so as to be capable of limited axial movement. The annular magnetic member faces the axial end plate of the first rotatable member with an axial gap therebetween. An electromagnet is associated with the first rotatable members and the annular magnetic member for attracting the other of the rotatable members and the annular magnetic member. The remaining regions are mechanically reinforced by increasing the thicknesses thereof.

An electromagnetic clutch includes a clutch rotor having a first friction surface and an annular armature plate having a second friction surface. The first friction surface and the second friction surface face each other. A friction member made of nonmagnetic material is fixedly disposed within a second groove formed at the second friction surface of the annular armature plate. A first end surface of the friction member projects with respect to the second friction surface of the annular armature plate. The first friction surface of the clutch rotor is provided with a first annular groove to receive the projecting portion of the friction member. Therefore, the depth of the second groove becomes smaller. Consequently, the number of magnetic lines of flux which radially penetrate through an annular portion of the annular armature plate at the location of the second groove is enhanced. Thus, the magnetic attraction between the annular armature plate and the clutch rotor is increased without increasing the weight of the electromagnetic clutch.

A magnetic clutch including a driven rotor having a drive pulley therearound and an armature assembly including a spring-mounted armature disc positioned to frictionally engage a face of the rotor. The primary feature of the invention is a resilient lining in and slightly projecting from the face of the armature disc and located around the pole faces. In operation the rotor face and the armature face are in metal-to-metal contact but the resilient lining prevents or reduces noise on impact. In a preferred form of the invention the armature assembly includes a circular resilient cushion on which a spring supporting plate and the armature disc are mounted.

An armature disc is attached to a resilient plastic spider by angularly spaced rivets. To prevent the spider from striking the disc and creating a buzzing noise, spacer pads are formed integrally with the spider adjacent the rivets and establish an axial gap of substantial width between the disc and the spider along arcs located between the rivets. The heads of the rivets are located in countersunk holes in the spider and pull axially through the plastic of the spider to release the armature disc from the spider if the spider becomes excessively hot as a result of slippage of the coupling. A metal washer on the hub of the coupling prevents the hot disc, when released, from dropping onto and melting a central sleeve portion of the spider.

Clutch and brake components especially adapted for use in electromagnetic semblies (50) includes a first disc (56) or plate having a ground surface (58) comprising parallel surface features and a second disc or plate (64) having a turned surface (66) comprising circular or spiral features. Excellent static and dynamic frictional coefficients are achieved. Preferably, the ground (58) and turned (66) surfaces have roughness of between Ra 3 and 300. A wide variety of variously alloyed steels may be utilized to fabricate the clutch or brake components.
