摘要: A system for measuring crude oil as it is transported from a storage tank to a transport vessel. The transport vehicle includes a fluid conveying line adapted to extend from the storage tank to the transport vessel. A pump is connected to the line to convey the oil from the tank to the vessel. A mass meter is disposed in the line. A microprocessor is electrically connected to and controls the mass meter so as to calculate the volume of liquid transferred from the storage tank to the transport vessel. A sample pot device is connected to the line and capable of taking an oil sample from the line that is representative of the entire amount of oil that is transferred.

摘要: A test kit for testing acidity of a lubricant in a climate control system containing a naphthalimide dye contains an aqueous solution having a salt and a known amount of hydroxide and an organic solution containing an alcohol and an organic solvent having a flash point of at least 130° F. When a lubricant is added to a combination of the aqueous solution and the organic solution, the color of the bottom layer indicates the acid content of the lubricant.

摘要: The chemical and/or physico-chemical determination of the ageing of a motor oil is very expensive and requires measuring methods which cannot be carried out on board a motor vehicle. The determination of only one oil condition parameter, for example the viscosity, only enables conditional statements to be made with respect to oil quality since conflicting effects may exist to varying degrees in this case. According to the invention, oil quality can be determined by a quartz base coated with a sensitive layer. The sensitive layer has a surface or volume which is adapted to an oil component and is suitable for the repeated incorporation and release of the oil component according to the concentration thereof. When the oil component is present, it is incorporated in the sensitive layer causing the resonant frequency of the layer to decrease via a mass effect or causing an effective increase of the component thickness or mass. As the oil ages, the proportion of the component incorporated in the sensitive layer decreases, so that the resonant frequency increases. A non-sensitive layer is used as a reference by which the viscosity effect of the oil on the oscillation of the quartz and the variation in viscosity of the motor oil are determined as a second important oil quality parameter.

摘要: An apparatus for determining the condition of engine lubricating oil includes a sensor having a plurality of spaced apart electrode pairs on a nonconductive polymer film. The sensor is operatively associated with an oil filter, which provides retro-fit capability and easy access for servicing and replacement. The multi-electrode pair design averages signal output to reduce operational electromagnetic interference noise. A forcing-function waveform reactive circuit is applied to the sensor input electrode as a common voltage potential. The output current from the sensor electrodes is then relayed to a current follower amplifier, which converts the output current into an equivalent voltage for comparison with predetermined values. Based on the voltage values, the on-board sensing system will determine the oil's condition, and will trigger a trouble code if the equivalent voltage falls within a predetermined range.

摘要: Method and device for predicting the flocculation threshold of asphaltenes contained in hydrocarbon mixtures. The method comprises the following stages: determining the refraction index (nA) of several asphaltenes used as reference asphaltenes; determining experimentally, for predetermined thermodynamic conditions, the variation of solubility index (&dgr;) in connection with the refraction index of hydrocarbon constituents including light hydrocarbons and reference asphaltenes; deducing therefrom a correlation relation modelling this variation of solubility index (&dgr;). These preliminary operations being performed, refraction index (nA) of the asphaltenes of the hydrocarbon mixture is determined under the same thermodynamic conditions and by reference to said correlation relation, solubility index (&dgr;) of the asphaltenes of said mixture is deduced therefrom; and from the solubility index of the asphaltenes of said mixture and from a thermodynamic equilibrium model, the flocculation threshold thereof is directly predicted. Applications: fast laboratory determination of asphaltene flocculation risks likely to hinder production and transport of crudes so as to quickly implement solutions intended to prevent them.

摘要: Sensing the presence of furfuraldehyde (FFA) in oil is effected by a porous solid sensor (10) comprising aniline acetate entrapped in an inert matrix. The matrix may be a sol-gel preferably based on methyltrimethoxysilane. The solid sensor (10) reacts with FFA to form a pink colored complex which has a characteristic which correlates with the concentration of FFA in the oil and which can be measured photo-optically. Photo-optical measurement may be by absorption or fluorescence when the sensor is irradiated with an interrogating beam. The absorption maximum wavelength is about 525 nm and irradiation at that wavelength produces a maximum fluorescent output at about 570 nm.

摘要: A continuous on-board diagnostic lubricant monitoring system and method evaluates lubricant quality and detects incipient lubricant failure due to contamination by measuring physical characteristics of the lubricant itself. The lubrication system (1) employs a diagnostic cell (27) which samples engine lubricant (EL) from an engine (2), and exposes the samples to sensors (28) which measure its physical characteristics. The senors (28) preferably include a permittivity sensor, a viscosity sensor, and a temperature sensor. Diagnostic testing based on the measurements can be carried out on-board via a controller (30) running selected algorithms or processes. A time to condemning limit for the lubricant, i.e., the time until the lubricant has degraded to given quality level, is calculated based on permittivity data received by the controller (30) from the sensors (28). Likewise, a time to condemning limit is calculated based on viscosity data. Based on the permittivity and temperature data, the controller (30) is able to detect incipient failure of the lubricant due to water or coolant contamination. Additionally, based on the monitored lubricant viscosity, the controller (30) is able to detect fuel contamination. In this manner, a superior lubricant monitoring system and method is achieved which is particularly applicable to railroad locomotives, mining machinery, and other off-highway vehicles.
