Abstract: Systems for examining a material comprising: an electromagnetic radiation source; a dielectric contrast analysis structure comprising: a bulk dielectric substance; a plurality of receptacles in the bulk dielectric substance for receiving the material; and an electromagnetic radiation detector, wherein the dielectric contrast analysis structure is between the electromagnetic radiation source and the electromagnetic radiation detector. Wherein the plurality of receptacles are substantially parallel with one another and are disposed in a dielectric contrast analysis structure that is disposed in a pipe. Wherein the dielectric contrast analysis structure comprises: a bulk dielectric substance having a first end, a second end, and the plurality of receptacles disposed within the bulk dielectric substance, wherein a flow path of the material through the receptacles is from the first end of the bulk dielectric substance to the second end of the bulk dielectric substance.

Abstract: Age differentiation of hydrocarbon samples may be achieved using a chemical fossil assemblage approach. For example, a method may comprise: determining a source facies for a hydrocarbon sample; inputting the source facies into a chemical fossil assemblage model; determining, using the chemical fossil assemblage model, one or more candidate chemical fossil assemblages and corresponding age biomarkers for the hydrocarbon sample based on the source facies; measuring a concentration or a related value of corresponding age biomarkers in the hydrocarbon sample to yield an age biomarker fingerprint; inputting the age biomarker fingerprint into a chemical fossil assemblage model; comparing the age biomarker fingerprint to the one or more candidate chemical fossil assemblages using the chemical fossil assemblage model; and estimating an age of the hydrocarbon sample based on the comparison.

Abstract: Industrial methods which utilize microwave-based sensors to detect in real-time the total solids content of aqueous solid colloidal dispersions such as oil sands tailings streams are provided. Optionally, these microwave-based sensors may be utilized in combination with automatic cleaning systems or filters, which prevent sensor fouling and allow for extended sensor use without manual cleaning. The output signals from the microwave sensor are used to adjust desired process parameters, e.g., the dosage of chemical additives and/or to maintain total solids within specified limits.

Abstract: The present invention relates to the composition of calcite impregnated with chemical tracer, process for obtaining the same and process for identifying the origin of scale through mapping the tracer incorporated in the calcite, which is added to a viscous gel-based mattress. The present invention further comprises the use of said composition to identify the source of calcium carbonate scale in a well. Thus, it is possible to verify whether the origin of the calcium carbonate in the scale formed in the production column comes from the material injected into the well. Once this occurrence is confirmed, it is possible to plan ways to mitigate scale formation through material to combat circulation loss, thus avoiding production losses associated with scale formation.

Abstract: A system for water cut sensing in an oil-water flow includes a laser-based spectroscopy sensor and a computer system. The laser-based spectroscopy sensor includes a first set of lasers that expose the oil-water flow to a first incident signal, a first photodetector that collects a first transmitted signal, the first transmitted signal being a component of the first incident signal transmitted through the oil-water flow, a second set of lasers that expose the oil-water flow to a second incident signal, and a second photodetector that collects a second transmitted signal, the second transmitted signal being a component of the second incident signal transmitted through the oil-water flow. The computer system that calculates the water cut of the oil-water flow based on the first transmitted signal and the second transmitted signal.

Abstract: A system and method for encapsulating commercially significant attributes of a hydrocarbon product into a single digital signature are presented. The digital signature may be generated from a physical product sample using optical techniques such as NIR spectroscopy. Digital signatures may be expressed in the form of composition, principle components derived from the spectra, or other properties derived from the original spectra which characterize, and help visualize, the variation present within the signals. Other physical property measurements and contaminant measurements may also be included in the digital signature and may be derived from the same measurement device or separate measurement devices whose output is integrated into a single digital signature. Embodiments of the invention may be used to confirm the identity of a hydrocarbon product, or to verify the composition of a hydrocarbon product.

Abstract: Tools and methods are used to determine the oil, water, and solids volume fractions in a drilling fluid at the rig site.
