摘要:
A fault protection system for impression devices of a printer detects fault current in the impression devices during non-print operation, checks the impression devices individually to determine the location of the fault and then disconnects the impression devices from the power supply. The fault protection system also includes means for recording the fault location data in a storage means which can be called out for later use in repairing the impression devices.

A printer control system for a belt printer has an arrangement for checking print hammer operating circuits by comparing a real time actual parity of the circuits with a precalculated expected parity. Prior to printing, a microprocessor calculates expected parity bytes for each subscan for storage in a storage device along with the print position fire data used for selecting the operating circuits to be activated in the related subscans. An actual parity byte is generated on a real time basis by ODD/EVEN parity circuits associated with groups of operating circuits for comparison with a composite parity byte generated each subscan by the microprocessor. The composite parity byte is generated by combining the expected parity bytes from the storage device for several successive subscans. The composite parity byte is updated each subscan by a process of subtracting the initial expected parity byte and adding a new subscan expected parity byte. Comparison is made when all the activating circuits are in stable condition.

A method and apparatus for testing print elements of a printer, such as a belt printer, in which the print element operating circuits are energized at an energy level insufficient to cause printing but sufficient to generate feedback signals for checking operativeness by a microprocessor.

From the variables print hammer magnet voltage, print hammer magnet temperature, impact force, and a value derivable from the actual print time, a control voltage, which correspondingly delays an early trigger pulse by means of a variable delay element, is determined in an "open" control loop. The variables are analogously combined by adding, subtracting, and multiplying the analogue values, and by subsequently forming a weighted sum.

An electrostatic matrix printer has a movable print head (1) in which a row of selectively energizable needles (2) is fixed for printing dots on a surface to be printed by selective energization of the needles in response to binary coded electrical signals having a number of bits, equal or less than the number of needles in the row. The binary signals, as well as determining the state of a group of consecutive needles in the row, to print different character columns, also include at least one further bit which determines the position of the said selected group of needles in the row, enabling characters of different height and vertical position to be printed.

Disclosed is a method and apparatus for establishing, verifying, and correcting tab settings and indexing parameters for text to be printed by a word processing system. The apparatus includes logic and related control networks for establishing a line of codes in memory indicative of the location and status of such tab settings and indexing parameters, for setting an electronic tab rack, for verifying and correcting such settings and parameters by, and responsive to, the advancement and backspacing of the printer carrier, and for producing a hard copy printout, during entry and playback, of such tab setting and indexing mode status.

Carriage space and line feed signals produced between consecutive character print signals are accumulated and logically combined to form a resultant signal rather than being executed as produced. In response to a character print signal, the carriage and line feed are moved in accordance with the resultant signal to the designated position and then the print operation is executed.

A self-diagnostic printer system divides tasks of the printer system into separate modules using a plurality of buses on a mother board. A central processing unit module performs the required operations in the system. An interface module interfaces the central processing module with a digital system user, a tape input, and an operator through a control panel. A timing and status module monitors a plurality of printer device fault conditions, generates a plurality of enable signals and drive signals and interfaces timing signals from a printer to the central processor unit. A power module generates driving currents for a clamping solenoid and a stepper motor so as to move the paper through the printer. A hammer driver module selectively fires hammer driver circuits to generate hard copy printout of digital information. An internal vertical format unit in which paper instructions are stored and selectively retrieved is used to direct the operation of the other modules according to a selected format. A detailed error, status and diagnostic scheme may be selectively executed at any point within the printer operation during any of the printer system's modes of operation, to provide visual output to the operator indicating an error or a status, and the nature and location of the error or type of status which has occurred so that any error within data or printer operation can be instantly analyzed and isolated to permit convenient rectification.

A system for printing dot-matrix characters wherein a double column of dot forming elements is used, and no single dot forming element is required to print more often than once in any four column interval of printed text. Means for timing the actuation of the dot forming elements wherein the "on" time of the individual actuators can be longer than the time interval between columns is included.

Errors occurring during the printing of characters in an impact printer using transfer ribbon are detected by scanning the ribbon optically after the printing operation using a slit scanner and analyzing the resulting signals to determine the value of the printed character. This value is compared with the value of the character which was to be printed. If a discrepancy exists, a printing error has occurred.
