摘要: A magnetic disk drive has an external environment monitoring function. Data is stored on available disk media while the magnetic disk drive is in an unfavorable environment. Under favorable conditions, the data is then moved to a write-restricted area of the media, which was unavailable while the magnetic disk drive was in the unfavorable environment. The magnetic disk drive uses a temperature sensor/atmospheric pressure sensor as a monitoring device and exercises a function, for example, for reading a reference signal stored in a predetermined area of the medium at predefined intervals. When the external environment is favorable for the magnetic disk drive, the present invention can increase the information storage capacity determined appropriate under the current operating conditions.

摘要: A movable information processing device which is provided with check means that checks whether or not both of moving distance information of the information processing device, which are stored in storage means for check and in a recording medium which can be dismounted from the information device when the storage medium is dismounted, agree with each other, and that allows supply of information such as navigation information only when these moving distance information agree with each other. The check means additionally checks at least one of difference between position information P1 stored in the storage medium when the storage medium is dismounted and present position information P2, and difference between day/time information T1 stored in the storage medium when the storage medium is dismounted and present day/time information T2, and allow supply of navigation information only when the checked results satisfy predetermined conditions.

摘要: There are provided a storage apparatus and a computer-readable recording medium, on whose storage areas, servo frames are arranged at uniform intervals in a spoke-like pattern. Each of the servo frames has an index bit storing section storing, as an index bit, part of an index pattern, which is operable to identify a storage area. The apparatus and the recording medium have a storage area recognizing unit for recognizing the storage areas based on the index bits, which are obtained by an index bit obtaining unit. The index bits, stored one in each of the index bit storing sections of the servo frames, are adapted to form, when being sequentially arranged, an index bit string in which such an index pattern repeatedly appears.

摘要: After special reproduction is executed, a position of data is promptly returned to a reproduction position at the start of the special reproduction by simple operation and normal reproduction is started at this reproduction position. If the special reproduction is executed during the normal reproduction, the special reproduction is started after the reproduction position at the start of the special reproduction is stored in a memory. If a point key is input while the special reproduction is being executed, after the special reproduction is stopped, or while the normal reproduction is being executed after the special reproduction is stopped, the reproduction position is read from the memory. The normal reproduction is started after moving the position of the data to this reproduction position.

摘要: A smart retry operation, or set of retry procedures to be performed in sequence, that optimizes itself for a data storage device's individual characteristics, including variations across the data storage media and variations introduced as the device degrades over time, is disclosed. The data storage media (e.g. a disc in a disc drive) is divided into a number of zones and a separate smart retry operation is maintained for each zone. The data storage media is then tested to find errors correctable by the retry procedures. A statistical likelihood for each retry procedure is developed. The sequential order of the retry procedures in each zone's operation is then optimized based on the statistics. A single read/write retry sequences or separate read and write retry sequences may be maintained. The retry operations may be constantly re-optimized over the lifetime of the data storage device.

摘要: Directories are provided for data recorded on a magnetic tape in the form of files having data demarcation signals, such as filemarks. Data storage logic arranges a map of the tape in fixed regions; establishes a window at each intersection between fixed regions, the window extending into at least one of the regions; determines whether at least one data demarcation signal is located in a window; if so, selects and identifies the properties and location of one of the data demarcation signals as within the window. If no data demarcation signal is present, the directory indicates an absence of data demarcation signals within the window.

摘要: An apparatus and method reduce the transfer of vibration to and/or from a data a data transfer mechanism in a data storage device by coupling an adaptive mount responsive to an electrical stimulus to the data transfer mechanism. In one embodiment of the invention, a controller reads a signal that relates to the position error of a read/write component in a data transfer mechanism, applies an algorithm, and varies the damping of an adaptive mount coupled to the data transfer mechanism. The controller may be further configured to report an error to a host system that identifies a substandard data transfer mechanism so that such data transfer mechanism can be repaired or replaced.
