摘要: An electric double layer capacitor that contains at least one electrochemical cell is provided. The cell contains electrodes (e.g., two electrodes) that each contain a porous matrix of electrochemically-active particles (e.g., carbon). An aqueous-based electrolyte is disposed in contact with the porous matrix. In accordance with the present invention, the electrolyte is provided with an anionic polymer that serves as binding agent for the electrochemically active particles and thus reduces electrolyte loss, especially at higher temperatures. Because the polymer is anionic in nature, it is generally hydrophilic and thus can retain its binding properties in the presence of water. The anionic nature of the polymer also allows it to remain stable in the presence of a corrosive polyprotic acid, which is employed in the electrolyte to enhance charge density. Thus, as a result of the present invention, a capacitor may be formed that is capable of exhibiting good electrical performance (e.g., high capacitance and low ESR), even at high temperatures (e.g., 70° C. and above).

摘要: An electric double layer capacitor includes a container including electric insulating material for housing the capacitor. At least two electrodes including granular particulate store a charge. An aqueous electrolyte, having a generally neutral pH, floods the at least two electrodes. A separator material including a porous electrical insulating and ionic conducting material separates the at least two electrodes. At least two collectors including graphite each in contact with an electrode conduct current. An elastic compression material compressing the at least two electrodes flooded by the aqueous electrolyte maintains a firm contact of the at least two collectors with material in flooded electrodes. End caps including a high conductivity material joined to the at least two collectors make external electrical connections.

摘要: A conductive electrolyte comprises an indicator dye for facilitating detection of electrolyte leakage in a high voltage electrolytic capacitor as well as for facilitating the determination as to when an electrolyte has reached a desired pH range. In a method for detecting electrolyte leakage, a capacitor comprising a flat stack of anodes enclosed in a housing with a lid and an electrolyte comprising an indicator dye is inspected for the presence of electrolyte leaking out of the capacitor. The indicator dye facilitates viewing leaking electrolyte. The indicator dye can be a coloring agent that changes the color of the electrolyte or can be a fluorescent that fluoresces when exposed to ultraviolet light. The indicator dye is also utilized as a pH indicator during the manufacture of electrolytic capacitors, wherein a base is introduced into an electrolyte having an indicator dye that changes pH when the electrolyte turns basic. The base is introduced into the electrolyte until the indicator dye causes the electrolyte to change color indicating the desired pH has been reached.
