An implantable medical device such as a defibrillator is described. The device includes an hermetically sealed housing containing a flat electrolytic capacitor and an energy source such as a battery. The battery is connected to the capacitor and provides charge thereto. The capacitor stores the charge at a relatively high voltage. The charge stored in the capacitor is discharged through a defibrillation lead to a site on or in the heart when fibrillation of the heart is detected by the implantable medical device. Methods of making and using the implantable medical device, the capacitor, and their various components are disclosed.

A flexible charge storage device in the form a supercapacitor includes a flexible capacitive element, which is housed within a flexible package. The capacitive element includes a plurality of interleaved sheet electrodes which have an insulator or separator between them and which are stacked in a face-to-face configuration. Alternate electrodes are interconnected by way of respective opposed tabs that extend outwardly from the capacitive element. The supercapacitor also includes a first terminal and a second terminal that are respectively electrically connected with the opposed tabs. The flexible package includes a single folded sheet. Ends of the package, as well as the portions of both sides, which overlap, are fixedly and sealingly abutted against one another by way of heat welding or the like. Accordingly, an electrolyte is retained within the package.

The sealing member has elasticity and is formed of a cross-linked structure of compound. The compound contains butyl rubber polymer as main component, phenol-based additive, and silane-based additive. Accordingly, the sealing member is improved in air-tightness, and the volatilization of the electrolytic solution becomes lessened. Further, an electronic component having such sealing member ensures excellent mounting ability. As a result, it is possible to obtain an electronic component capable of assuring excellent reliability for a long period of time even in a high temperature atmosphere and under high-temperature high humidity conditions.
