A method and system for selecting an optimal size of a jitter buffer in a real time communications system includes calculating a frame loss rate from packet arrival statistics. The packet arrival statistics include determining an average queue time a frame spends in a jitter buffer and determining the difference between an expected arrival time and actual arrival time of a sample of data packets into a receiver. The frame loss rate is calculated by considering the frames that arrive late, frames that are lost in the network and frames that overflow due to an arriving burst of frames.

Switching nodes of a communications network are assigned subnetworks and are interconnected to one another in any desired fashion. Stored in a source switching node is at least topology information on the node's own subnetwork and on the interconnection of the subnetworks. In addition, the source switching node is provided with the communications conditions which are required for the communications link to be set up. By reference to the topology information, a subset of switching nodes and connecting lines which satisfies the communications conditions is selected and a route to the destination switching node is determined. Included in this process is a route which, in the direction from the source switching node to the destination switching node, leaves at least one subnetwork once and returns to the subnetwork again in the further course of the route. The routing information is then formed from the route which has been determined.

The ATM transmission equipment detects communication anomalies or extracts maintenance/operation information from data strings on STM lines, such as high-speed digital lines or ISDN lines, and replaces only the necessary information resulting from those extractions or detections with alarm signals. The alarm signals are then transmitted together with information channels to the ATM network via a cell assembler/dissembler. The information channels and alarm information that arrive from the ATM network are rearranged into STM line data strings and output to LT units, DSUs, or terminals.

A network interface buffer manager is coupled to the network interface media access control layer. A network interface buffer memory is coupled to the network interface buffer manager. The network interface buffer manager is configured to transfer frame data between the network interface buffer memory and the media independent interface via the network interface media access control layer.

An extender circuit provides a serial communication interface between an ATM layer and a PHY layer. The extender circuit includes a first circuit serially coupled to a second circuit. The first circuit communicates in parallel with the ATM layer, and the second circuit communicates in parallel with the PHY layer. The extender circuit additionally includes a serial link which serially transmits signals between the first and second circuits. The serial link includes a first serial link for transmitting a first serial signal from the first circuit to the second circuit, and a second serial link transmitting a second serial signal from the second circuit to the first circuit. The first circuit and the second circuit include similar architecture. The first circuit includes a parallel interface circuit for communicating in parallel with the ATM layer and a serial interface circuit coupled to the parallel interface circuit for serially communicating with the second circuit. The parallel interface circuit includes control circuitry, such as a programmable logic device, and memory circuitry, such as a first-in-first-out (FIFO) memory device. The serial interface circuit includes serializing/deserializing circuitry which includes serializing circuitry for serializing a plurality of parallel signals received from the parallel interface circuit and outputting a plurality of serial output signals. The serializing/deserializing circuitry further includes deserializing circuitry for deserializing a plurality of serial input signals to form a plurality of deserialized signals and providing the deserialized signals to the parallel interface circuit.

A system for communicating between a first network and a second network, wherein the first network may alternately communicate through one of a plurality of communication devices, each having a different IP address. In one embodiment, the first network is contained in a vehicle. The first network initiates communications through one of the communication devices and communicates the IP address of this currently-used device to a proxy server. If communications are lost, the first network attempts to establish communications through another of the communication devices. In a first mode, the first network communicates with the second network directly, using the IP address of the currently-used communication device for return communications. In a second mode, the first network communicates with the second network directly, but return communications are routed through the proxy server, which forwards them to the first network. When the second network is expected to quickly respond to the communications of the first network, the first mode is normally used since the current communication device is expected to maintain communication over the short term. If return communications are expected to be slow, the second mode is normally used since the current communication device is expected to lose communication at some point over the long term. In some situations, a hybrid of the first and second modes is used.
