In a communications system having incoming communications signals and outgoing communications signals the outgoing communications signals may undesirably include an echo signal derived from the incoming communications signals. Accordingly, echo cancellation techniques may be applied in the communications system, including generating weighting filter coefficients based on linear prodictive coding coefficients calculated from a block comprising a plurality of sequential samples of the incoming communications signals. The incoming communications signals are filtered through a weighting filter utilising the weighting filter coefficients to produce a weighted incoming communications signals. Estimated echo signals are generated by filtering the incoming communications signals through an adaptive transversal filter, the adaptive transversal filter using adaptive filter coefficients. Then, the estimated echo signals can be subtracted from the outgoing communications signals to produce error signals. Advantageously, the adaptive filter coefficients are determined for each sample in said block on the basis of the weighted incoming communications signals and the error signals.

An echo canceller processing echo, noise and near end talk in a narrower, but still intelligible, frequency band for reducing required processing power and complexity. In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, an input audio signal of captured sound in an audio communication system is decimated and then divided into a number of sub bands by an analyze filter. Each sub band is processed as in background audio echo cancelling by subtracting the signal with an echo estimate from a model of the acoustic signal in the respective sub band, except from that the signal is also bypassed, adjusted by a filter and subtracted from the processed signal. The resulting signals are then recombined by a synthesize filter and interpolated to the original sampling rate and bandwidth. Finally, the output from the synthesize filter is added to the input audio signal, which has been delayed and adjusted by a filter. The filters are controlled by a control algorithm detecting the presence of near end sound, far end sound and noise, so that the filters, and consequently the high pass filter of the echo canceller, only pass high frequency (above low pass frequencies) when only near end sound is detected.

An object of the present invention is to reduce unwanted voice echoed back to the transmitting party in an IP telephone. In order to achieve this object, in the curl cord of the present invention, two microphone lines connected to a differential input type microphone are respectively wired at approximately the same distance from a single speaker line connected to a single end output type speaker. Thereby, noise signals caused by cross-talk to the microphone lines from the speaker line transmitting the voice signal of the transmitting party will be of the same phase and same amplitude. By cancelling out these noise signals by means of common mode rejection in the differential amplifier provided in the base unit, it is possible to reduce the echoing back of unwanted voice to the transmitting party.

An echo canceller receives the sum signal based on a unit of a buffer from the input buffer, cancels the echo signal from the sum signal, and outputs the first input signal. A noise canceller receives the first input signal based on the buffer unit from the echo canceller, and cancels a noise from the first input signal. A level controller receives the first input signal based on the buffer unit from the noise canceller, and adjusts a level of the first input signal. A speech compression module receives the first input signal based on the buffer unit from the level controller, converts the first input signal into a digital signal, and compresses the digital signal. Various information items produced as results of operations can be shared, and operation performances can be enhanced on the basis of the shared information items.

An apparatus and methods supporting improved echo cancellation in a packet network is disclosed. An embodiment of the present invention may permit a split-band communication system operating in a narrowband mode to provide improved suppression of hybrid echo generated by the conversion of signals from a packet network to a two-wire analog circuit. By detecting the presence of signal characteristics outside of the relatively narrower bandwidth to be communicated, such an embodiment may more accurately detect the occurrence of speech received from a party on a relatively wider bandwidth communication circuit. The accurate detection of speech permits more effective suppression of any hybrid echo remaining after echo cancellation. An embodiment of the present invention may also have application in other systems that detect signals received via a path having a bandwidth greater than that to be transmitted.

Long distance telephone connections must commonly employ echo cancellers to eliminate irritating echo. The normal practice is to additionally employ non-linear processors (NLPs) as an integral component of an echo canceller in order to eliminate small residual echo which remains after initial echo cancellation. While such devices do indeed remove remaining residual echo, they also may introduce additional problems, such as suppression of the background signal. However, in some cases there is no need to deploy a potentially problematic non-linear processor. If the overall route delay of the telephone connection is not excessive, the participants do not notice the residual echo. Therefore, a determination is made of the end to end delay of the overall telephone connection. If the determined delay is not excessive, non-linear processing is not applied or is applied less aggressively. This results in a clearer telephone call, free from non-linear processor problems.
