    摘要: In an image display which reproduces a color image by using lights color-separated into four or more colors through color filters, the objects of the invention are to effectively utilize the energy of light from a light source and to reduce the effect that a slight shift of the spectral transmittance characteristics of the color filters exerts on the spectral distributions of the lights after color separated. In an image display having a light source and four or more kinds of color filters and for color-separating light emitted from the light source into four or more colors through the four or more kinds of color filters and reproducing a color image by using the color-separated lights, the spectral transmittance characteristics of the color filters are set so that the cutoff wavelengths of the four or more kinds of color filters exist in a wavelength region in which the spectral distributions obtained by multiplying the spectral emissivity characteristic of the light emitted from the light source by the color matching functions are smaller than the values obtained by multiplying the average values of the spectral distributions in the wavelength region from 380 to 780 nm by an integer.

    摘要: A sequential color display system using a white light source (202) to create a full color image projected onto an image plane (214). A dynamic filter (206), typically a series of moving dichroic filters, generates a series of primary colored light beams that are swept across the surface of a spatial light modulator (210). Light rejected by the dynamic filter (206) enters a light recycler (204) and is reapplied to the dynamic filter (206). The light recycler is typically one or more reflective surfaces, including mirrors, baffles, enclosures, lamp reflectors, TIR surfaces, or specially coated material arranged in such a way as to encourage light toward an aperture separating the light recycler (204) and the dynamic filter (206). Typically all three primary colors are produced simultaneously by the dynamic filter (206). The illuminated portion of the dynamic filter (206) is imaged onto the modulator (210) and a controller (216) provides appropriate image data for each portion of the modulator (210) in synchronization with the sweep of the primary color bands across the modulator surface. The primary color bands are modulated by the spatial light modulator (210) and the modulated light is focused by lens (212) onto the image plane (214). The viewer integrates the light arriving at each portion of the image plane (214) over a frame period to provide the perception of a full-color image.

    摘要: A display system 100 in which light from source (102) is focused onto a spinning color wheel (104). The spinning color wheel (104) creates of beam of light that changes from one primary color to the next in rapid sequence. The primary colored beam of light impinges a spatial light modulator (106), in this case a DMD. A controller (108) receives an input video signal and sends image data to the spatial light modulator (106) in synchronization with the color wheel (104)—image data representing the red portions of the image is sent during the period in which the red color filter is passing through the beam of light. The modulated red beam of light is focused onto an image plane (110) by projection lens (112) to form a red image. The process repeats as the green and blue filters pass through the path of the light beam. The eye of the viewer integrates the three primary color images giving the perception of a single full-color image. The display system uses a single nominal color wheel speed to display input signals having various frame rates. The nominal color wheel speed is selected to allow the same color wheel rate to be used for a variety of input frame rates. The color wheel speed is selected to provide a sub-frame rate that is an integer multiple the frame rate of each potential input format.

    摘要: The present invention provides a high brightness color selective light modulator (CSLM) formed by a polarization modulator positioned between two retarder stacks. The modulator changes the apparent orientation of one retarder stack relative to the other so that, in a first switching state of the modulator the two retarder stacks cooperate in filtering the spectrum of input light, and in a second switching state the two retarder stacks complement each other, yielding a neutral transmission spectrum. Two or more CSLM stages can be used in series, each stage providing independent control of a primary color. One preferred embodiment eliminates internal polarizers between CSLM stages, thereby providing an additive common-path full-color display with only two neutral polarizers. Hybrid filters can be made using the CSLMs of this invention, in combination with other active or passive filters. The CSLMs of this invention can be used in many applications, particularly in the areas of recording and displaying color images. They can be arranged in a multi pixel array by pixelating the active elements, and can be implemented as color filter arrays, using patterned passive retarders rather than active polarization modulators.

According to one embodiment of the present invention, the method comprises selecting a first, second, and third color source. The first and second color sources are divided into a high-efficiency group and a low-efficiency group based on the efficiency of the color source. If the first color source is selected from the high-efficiency group (1102), the second color source may be selected from either the high-efficiency group or the low-efficiency group (1104). If the first color source is selected from the low efficiency group (1102), the second color source is selected from the high-efficiency group (1106). According to one embodiment of the present invention, the third color source is selected (1108) without first sorting the third color sources into high and low-efficiency groups.
