An alloyed copper wire rod is formed by continuous rod-casting, wherein a core rod is driven through a crucible containing molten metal. High purity copper melt is continuously charged into the crucible; to which an alloying material is simultaneously added in a quantity which corresponds to the given casting speed of the core rod. The required alloy thus obtained is crystallized on the surface of the core-rod as it passes through the crucible and the rod produced is treated in the usual manner i.e., cooling, rolling and coiling.

There is disclosed a mold assembly for casting posts and plate connector straps onto stacks of plates of lead acid type batteries wherein molten metal is circulated through one or more channels in the assembly and selectively damned to overflow into adjacent mold cavities. Cycle time and properties of the posts and connector straps are improved by constructions which impart a large thermal mass to the channel walls and a small thermal mass to the mold cavity walls. Thermal isolation of the mold cavity walls from the channel walls further enhances these conditions whereby the molds can be elevated in temperature prior to the casting operation and rapidly cooled during that operation. Cooling of the post mold cavities earlier and at a faster rate than the strap mold cavities increases post strength. A mold frame construction containing the molten metal flow channel and one or more inserts for the frame provide the desirable thermal properties while lending flexibility to the apparatus. Coolant circuits are provided for the inserts with flow paths which influence the sequence and speed of cooling of mold insert portions.

This invention relates to a process for casting articles from molten metal by the immersion of a mould or stack of moulds carried in a jig into a melt of the metal to be cast such that the cavity or cavities in the or each mould become filled with molten metal as the jig is immersed in the melt, whereafter the jig carrying the mould or stack of moulds is removed from the melt. Each mould cavity has a permanently open ingate and at least some of the heated air or gas within the cavity escapes through the ingate as the ingate passes through the surface of the melt, thereby preventing the entry of impurities from the surface of the melt into the cavity.

An extrusion head for producing a multilayer blown tubular film from thermoplastic polymer melts with the film layers being adhered by a bonding agent, the extrusion head including at least one annular channel associated with two adjacent melt extrusion passages and in fluid connection with at least one of the two passages to provide an uninterrupted, uniform surface coating of a liquid bonding agent on at least one of the opposing surfaces of the film layers as they are melt extruded. A composite mold construction for casting on the connector straps, posts, and terminals for lead acid electrical storage batteries according to the techniques of U.S. Pat. Nos. 3,718,174 and 3,802,488 wherein the mold cavity areas are alternately heated by direct flame on one face and then chilled by a coolant on their opposite face to freeze metal in the cavities without freezing molten metal flowing in adjacent flow channels. A plurality of mold cavity partition inserts are arranged to be interchangeable in the main mold assembly to enable a single mold assembly to be utilized for several arrangements of battery cells, strappings, and terminals. Thermal distortion of the mating parts is minimized to maintain the cavities free of leaks by interfitting under cuts and pinned or otherwise keyed couplings between the relatively thin inserts and the more massive primary portions of the mold assembly.
