The present invention is directed to a coated substrate comprising: A) an electroconductive composite substrate comprising a resinous matrix reinforced with fibers, and B) a cured coating layer electrophoretically deposited on at least at least a portion of a surface of the substrate, wherein the cured coating layer is deposited from a curable, electrodepositable coating composition comprising: (1) a resin component containing an active hydrogen-containing, cationic or anionic resin comprising an acrylic, polyester, polyurethane and/or polyepoxide polymer; and (2) a curing agent. The present invention is further directed to a process for coating a plastic, electroconductive substrate comprising electrophoretically depositing on the substrate the curable, electrodepositable coating composition described above, and heating the coated substrate to a temperature less than 250°F for a time sufficient to cure the electrodeposited coating on the substrate.

The present invention is directed to curable film-forming compositions comprising: (a) a polymeric binder comprising a polyester having hydroxyl functional groups; (b) a curing agent comprising a polyisocyanate having at least three isocyanate functional groups; and (c) a catalyst; wherein after application to a substrate and cure, the coating demonstrates a Konig pendulum hardness of at least 30 at ambient temperatures of 15 to 25C, a softening point greater than or equal to 34C, and a 20 gloss recovery of at least 40% when subjected to DRY ABRASION TEST METHOD.

There is described a method for the production of a functional polyester having functional group X. The method comprises the step of melt blending a composition comprising (i) a high number average molecular weight (Mn) polyester having a Mn of ≥6,000 Da; and (ii) a functional compound comprising functional group Y which may be the same as functional group X or be different to functional group X but be operable to form functional group X in the functional polyester. The composition is melt blended such that the high Mn polyester and the functional compound react to produce the functional polyester. The high Mn polyester has a Mn that is higher than the Mn of the functional compound. The present invention extends to functional polyesters produced by the method; aqueous, solventborne and powder coating compositions containing the functional polyester; and articles coated with the said coating compositions.

The second layer comprises a second film-forming resin, which is the same or different as the first film-forming resin, and a flake pigment. The contrast ratio of the second layer is no greater than 0.80. The coating system has a flop index of 19 or greater, such as, 20 or greater, 21 or greater, 22 or greater, 23 or greater, 24 or greater, 25 or greater, or 26 or greater.
