Abstract:
A cutter is provided with a releasably secured cutting insert nested in an insert pocket. The cutting insert is generally polygonal shaped in top view, and has a protrusion received in a recess formed in a cutter body. The cutter may be applied in turning, milling, boring and/or drilling, threading and/or chamfering, facilitating usage of one interchangeable insert tool as opposed to several, solid tools.
Abstract:
A bur 100 for use with a machine comprises a head 104 and a shank 102 that are made of dissimilar materials with a joint 106 between the head 104 and the shank 102. The material of the head 104 has a lower coefficient of thermal expansion than the material of the shank 102. The shank 102 has a recess 112 in one end. The head 104 has a working surface 126 and a projecting portion 114 that cooperates with the recess 112. The joint 106 is formed at an interface between the projecting portion 114 and the recess 112 whereby a portion of the head 104 that includes the projecting portion 114 is compressively stressed. The projecting portion 114 may have a cone-like shape and the recess 112 may have a cup-like shape. The material of the shank 102 may be stainless steel and the material of the head 104 may comprise metal carbide. The bur 100 may be a dental bur.

Abstract:
A coupling system for mounting a cutting apparatus to a machine tool having a cutting apparatus and an adapter. The cutting apparatus has a first mounting flange having either a central bore or a central boss. The adapter has a second mounting flange having the other of a central bore or a central boss. The central boss on one of the mounting flanges forms a mating engagement with the central bore of the other mounting flange to align the two mounting flanges at a common center when the cutting apparatus is connected to the adapter. Additionally, each mounting flange may have at least one of a post or a groove located between an outer perimeter of the mounting flange and the central bore or central boss. When the cutting apparatus is connected to the adapter, at least one of the posts forms a mating engagement with a corresponding groove.
Abstract:
Theinvention relates to a tool intended for chip removing machining and of the type that comprises a long narrow basic body (1) and a replaceable loose top (2), in particular a slender, rotatable tool, such as a shank-end mill, a contour mill, a drill, and the like. The loose top (2) is connected to the basic body via a first coupling, e.g., a thread coupling, that includes a seating (9) formed in one end of the basic body and a male element (4) formed in one end of the loose top (2).The basic body (1) is composed of a primary part body (11) of cemented carbide or the like, as well as a secondary part body (12) of steel in which the seating (9) of the first coupling is formed.Said two part bodies (11,12) are interconnected via a second coupling, suitably a thread coupling, which includes a second seating in the secondary 15 part body (12), as well as a male element (16) that is formed on the primary part body (11) and has flank surfaces that are arranged to apply, together with the corresponding flank surfaces of the second seating, joining axial forces to the part bodies by turning the same in relation to each other.
Abstract:
A face milling or end tool (10), includes a hollow cutter head (11) of a cylindrical configuration formed with a plurality of cutter edges (16a) on its outer cylindrical surface, and with a plurality of passageways (16b) therethrough leading from the cutter edges (16a) to the interior of the hollow cutter head (11); the cutter edges (16a) being oriented such that, upon rotation (a) of the cutter tool (10) while the outer cylindrical surface of the hollow cutter head (11) is engaged with a workpiece, the cutter edges (16a) remove portions of the workpiece and direct such removed portions via the passageways (16b) into the interior of the cutter head (11) for removal therefrom trough windows (13) in a mounting section (12) of the tool (10).
Abstract:
A cutter apparatus comprising a workpiece holder for holding a workpiece having a longitudinal axis, which workpiece is to be cut to a particular shape by removing selected portions thereof during one or more cutting strokes; a tool holder for holding a cutter tool having a longitudinal axis and cutter edges engageable with the workpiece to remove portions thereof during each cutting stroke; and a drive system operable, when the workpiece holder holds a workpiece and the cutter tool holder holds a cutter tool, for rotating one of the holders about its longitudinal axis and for bringing the cutter edges of the cutter tool into engagement with the workpiece to remove selected portions thereof during each cutting stroke; wherein, during each cutting stroke, the drive system effects a relatively long unidirectional displacement between the cutter tool and workpiece along a first orthogonal axis; and a plurality of relatively short reciprocatory displacements between the cutter tool and workpiece along a second orthogonal axis perpendicular to said first orthogonal axis.
Abstract:
A tooling system is proposed having at least two tooling parts (1, 23) in contact with one another in the region of an interface, where intermeshing is provided in that those contact areas (15, 25) facing towards one another of the tooling parts have teeth (7, 27) and depressions (9, 29) engaging into one another. A feature of the system is that the manner of intermeshing is such that the contact areas (5, 25) can be brought into contact only in at least one certain rotation-angle position with respect to the central axis (15) of the tooling parts.
