    Abstract: To provide in vitro assays for modelling the human side effects of drugs, two procedures are disclosed. Firstly, a rapid fixing protocol is provided that can improve the ability to assay cell surface markers of cell activation, allowing them to be quantified while still present at high levels. This fixing protocol is particularly useful when working with whole blood, thereby permitting immune cell responses to be assessed in the presence of endogenous plasma proteins and the like. Secondly, the CD11b cell surface marker can be used as a predictive indicator of undesired inflammatory activity. Substances can thus be tested in vitro against human blood cells, particularly substances that are not known or expected to provoke an inflammatory response, with up regulated expression of CD11b indicating a potential in vivo problem. These two approaches can be used separately or in combination.

    Abstract: There are provided processes for analysing a plurality of different samples. The processes comprise the steps of: a) applying the samples to a support, to which an analytical component is immobilised; and b) allowing the samples to interact with the analytical component, thus permitting analysis of the samples. The samples are applied in step a) to different areas of the support to produce a spatial arrangement of samples on the support. The spatial arrangement of the samples is maintained in step b), thus permitting the results of the analysis to be matched to individual samples.

    Abstract: Diphtheria toxin may not be the sole antigenic component that gives rise to protective immunity in diphtheria vaccines. C.diphtheriae pilus proteins have been found within diphtheria vaccines. These pilus proteins may contribute towards the ability of a vaccine to protect against C.diphtheriae infection, and so it may be desirable to enrich their presence in the vaccines. Conversely, their presence means that diphtheria vaccines are not homogenous, and so it may be desirable for quality control purposes to remove them from vaccines, enriching the toxin as the main immunogenic component while retaining protective efficacy.

    Abstract: A device for individually analysing cells of interest, comprising (a) a channel for receiving the contents of a cell of interest, wherein the channel has an input end and an output end, and (b) a cell trapping site in proximity to the input end of the channel, wherein (i) the input end of the channel is adapted such that an intact cell of interest cannot enter the channel; and (ii) the channel contains one or more analytical components for analysing the contents of the cell of interest. In use, a cell is applied to the device, where it is trapped by the cell trapping means. The cell cannot enter the channel intact, but its contents can be released in situ to enter the channel's input end. The contents can then move down the channel, towards the output end, and they encounter the immobilised reagents, thereby permitting analysis of the cell contents.
