Abstract:
A filter cartridge housing formed of a manifold and a bowl is disclosed. A threaded ring substantially fixed in a position relative to either the bowl or the manifold is used to positively drive the manifold and bowl together and apart as needed and to form a secure and liquid tight seal between the two components when they are together. In one example the threaded ring is held by a key in the keyway on the outer surface of the bowl. The threads of the ring mate with the threads on the manifold. As the ring is relatively fixed by the key/keyway to its position on the bowl, it moves the bowl relative to the manifold as the ring is rotated onto or off of the mating threads of the manifold. The key/keyway may be formed on the manifold instead. Alternatively, other retention devices such as a ridge, lip or snap ring may be used in lieu of the key/keyway design.
Abstract:
A twist-on renewable filter for attachment to a distribution head assembly (200). The filter housing is fabricated from components (150, 160) that are made of a polymeric material that are fused together to form the one-piece hollow housing. A filter media (140) assembly is rigidly bonded at both ends within the housing. The renewable filter can be removed and cleaned, for example, by reverse flushing the filter with a cleaning solution. A bypass valve (250) is provided within the filter and functions to allow sufficient fluid to bypass the filter media when the filter media (140) has become contaminated and will not permit the full volume of the normal oil stream to be filtered. The bypass valve (250) has the capacity to permit full volume of the normal oil stream to bypass the filter media when necessary, for example, during a cold start.
Abstract:
A filter assembly comprises a metal housing (10, 50) containing a casing (11, 51) encapsulating a filter element (12, 52). The casing (11, 51) includes an inlet (27, 80) and an outlet (29, 78) for feeding fluid to the filter element (12, 52) and for removing filtered fluid. The casing (11, 51) is self-supporting. In a second aspect, the filter element (12, 52) has an open centre filled by a member (14, 54) that reduces the volume of the centre. A head member (22, 62) is provided that forms an end cap for the filter element and includes a first passage leading to the centre of the filter element and a second passage leading to an exterior surface of the filter element. The filter element may comprise a filter member (52) having a first end closed by a head member (62) providing first and second passages (74, 81) with the second end being closed by an end cap (53), the head member (62) including a part which is substantially the same as the end cap (53) and has a hole (66) leading to the first passage (78).
Abstract:
A filter (10) comprises a housing having a container (12) and a cover (14) which enclose a filter element (30). The container includes a hollow central post (34) which extends upwardly from a base (32). The upper end cap (72) for the filter element includes a base (76) supporting the filter media (70) and a cylinder (112) extending downwardly within the central cavity of the filter media. A first seal (84) is provided around the periphery of the upper end cap to seal the intersection between the container and the cover. A second seal (104) on an upwardly-extending flange (100) on the upper end cap seals against a corresponding downwardly-extending flange (110) on the cover. A plurality of slots (90) in the upper end cap provide a flow path from an inlet (16) on the cover to the outer surface of the filter media. A plurality of slots (118) in the upper end cap provide a flow path from the inner surface of the filter media to an outlet (18) on the cover. The lower end cap (74) also includes a base (120) supporting the filter media and a cylinder (130) extending upwardly within the cavity of the filter media and defining a central lower opening for receipt of the post. The cylinders (112, 130) of the upper and lower end caps axially overlap and define a radially inwardly-facing groove which receives a third O-ring seal (138). The third O-ring seal provides a seal between the filter element and the central post of the filter element. A bolt (50) is received within the hollow central post of the container and extends upwardly through an opening (51) formed in the cover. A nut (57) is tightened down on the bolt to fasten the cover and the container together. The head (54) of the bolt includes a surface geometry which cooperates with the surface geometry of the bore (60) in the central post to prevent the bolt from rotating as the nut is tightened down.
Abstract:
A fuel filter comprises a head (96) having an inlet (100) and an outlet (102). The head is connected to an element (98, 266) by a nipple (186) which has a valve element (196) therein. An actuating projection (222, 272) is engageable with said valve element to open flow through said nipple when the correct element is attached thereto. The failure of the nipple to sufficiently extend into the element, which occurs when an improper element is attached, prevents flow through the nipple and renders the filter inoperable. The actuating projection is further supported on a central portion (220, 276) which prevents connection to a nipple that extends too far into the element. As a result, only the proper element may be attached in operative connection to the head.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a filter device with a housing (10) having connections for a fluid which can be secured to a filter pot (16) which has at least one filter element (20) secured by a holder (18), and with a closure (22) preventing the undesired leakage of fluid. As the closure (22) has at least two sealing plates (36a, b) which at least partly bound ports (40a, b) in mutually staggered array in two different planes and which can be mutually moved under the effect of a power store (50) for closing or opening the ports (40a, b) in such a way that, as the filter pot (16) is moved further away from the housing (10), the closure (22) gradually seals at least one of the connections and/or the filter pot (16) off from the environment, the filter device has a universally usable closure which can be economically produced, requires little space inside the device and operates reliably.
Abstract:
An assembly is provided of filter bowl (10), cartridge (12) and head (11) in which the filter bowl (10) can be removed after it has descended from the filter head (11) through a distance corresponding to only a minor part of the length of the filter cartridge (12). The cartridge (12) is a push fit into a vertical port (52) in the filter head (11). Flange (18) of the cartridge (12) and slotted buttress (44) of the bowl (12) establish a mechanical connection between the filter bowl (10) and the filter cartridge (12) so that the filter bowl (10) and the filter cartridge (12) are together mountable to and demountable from the filter head (11). The filter cartridge (12) having the support flange (18) that coacts with the buttress (44) is also claimed per se.
