Bi-constituent fiber having a cationic dyeable nylon, usually Type 6 nylon adequately sulfonated, as the major component with an intimate melt blent of a minor amount of a polyester are dyed with a anionic dye to improve lighfastness, ozone resistance and to provide resistance to acid-type stains. The fibers may be tufted into carpets that are resistant to acid-type stains. Both components of the bi-constituent fiber may come from recycled sources so that 100% of the fiber, excluding processing additives, is based on post consumer recycled polymer.

In a preferred embodiment, the present process involves subjecting a fabric comprised of conjugate yarns to an acidic treatment, which degrades a portion of one component of the conjugate yarns and to dyeing. The acid treatment, given certain reaction kinetics, removes a portion of the polyamide element of the conjugate filament. The at least partial removal of the polyamide component results in a fabric has enhanced dyed appearance, especially when dyed a dark shade. In an alternate embodiment, the fabric may also be treated with a basic solution to improve its moisture transport properties.

A blended product of a fiber dyeable with a disperse dye and a polyurethane fiber having been dyed with a disperse dye which exhibits a fastness to sweat and alkali of 3 degree according to JIS L-0848-A, has high color fastness and has a surface dyeing depth of 20 or less in terms of L value in spectrocalorimetry. The dyed blended product with a polyurethane fiber can be prepared by pretreating a mixed fabric, such as knitted fabric, of a fiber dyeable with a disperse dye and a polyurethane fiber with a dye bath solution containing a poly-valent metal compound and tannic acid prior to dyeing with a disperse dye or by dyeing it using a dye bath containing a poly-valent metal compound and tannic acid together with a disperse dye.
