Abstract: A system, method, and apparatus for coordinating tasks in a control system for an optical disc drive for optical media with a pitted premastered area that cannot be overwritten and a grooved user-writeable area that can be overwritten. The optical disc drive includes a first processor operable to communicate with a second processor, wherein the first processor includes instructions for performing non-time-critical tasks, and the second processor includes instructions for performing time-critical tasks, such as reading from and writing to optical media in the disc drive. The first processor monitors the status of the time critical tasks in the second processor and transmits commands to perform operations in the second processor. The first processor also controls power mode, manages recovery from errors, controls focus, tracking/seeking, spin, physical sector address (PSA), a laser, adjusts gains, and monitor cartridge load/eject. The first processor sequences and monitors functions performed in the second processor and the second processor issues an interrupt when an error condition is detected in the second processor. The first processor detects the interrupt, and disables detecting further interrupts until the interrupt is serviced. Servicing the interrupt includes recording the error state and changing focus and tracking parameters based on the error condition detected. The first processor can be used to perform other tasks while it is waiting to receive a notice of a new command, a notify event, or a performance event.

Abstract: The present invention is related to a method and apparatus for limiting movement of an actuator assembly (134) in a data storage/retrieval system (100). In one embodiment of the apparatus, a base (104) is provided on which first (154) and second (220) devices are mounted. The first device (154) is rotatably mounted to the base (104) and reads or writes data to a data storage disk (126). The second device (220) operates between first and second states. In the first state, the first device (154) is capable of movement with respect to the base (104). Abstract: The present invention is related to a method and apparatus for limiting movement of an actuator assembly in a data storage/retrieval system. In one embodiment of the apparatus, a base is provided on which first and second devices are mounted. The first device is rotatably mounted to the base and reads or writes data to a data storage disk. The second device operates between first and second states. In the first state, the first device is capable of movement with respect to the base. In the second state, the second device operates to inhibit movement of the first device with respect to the base. Abstract: Micro lenses are fabricated using processes which operate on multiple lenses at a time. In one embodiment, wafer-scale processing includes employing photolithography for defining gray-scale masks which permit relatively smooth or continuous curvatures of lens surfaces to be formed by, e.g., reactive ion etching. Processes and materials are used which achieve desired etching at a sufficiently rapid rate such as etching to a depth of about 200 micrometers in less than about 10 hours. Wafer-scale molding processes can also be used. Diffractive features can be formed on or adjacent lens surfaces to provide functions such as dispersion correction. Also, sub-wavelength scale features may be etched to provide quarter-wave plate functionality, birefringence, anti-reflective functions and the like. Structures such as mounting rings and/or crash stops can be formed integrally with the lens body, eliminating the need to glue or otherwise couple separate components.

Abstract: A disk drive includes a housing, a cartridge tray (244), and a cam plate (252). The cartridge tray is adapted to hold a cartridge that includes a data storage disk. The housing has a pair of vertical cartridge tray pin slots (298, 300) which hold tray pins (264, 266) that are part of the cartridge tray (244). The cam plate includes a pair of cam slots (274, 276) formed at an oblique angle to the cartridge tray pin slots. The tray pins extend through the cam slots into the cartridge tray pin slots. Movement of the cam plate back and forth causes the tray pins and cartridge tray to move vertically between a loaded position, where data can be read from or written to the data storage disk, to an unloaded position. A disk drive also contains a pair of spring elements which act as eject limiters, engaging catches on a cartridge to prevent the cartridge from being completely ejected from the drive. The cartridge is positioned in the X and Y dimensions by contact between an alignment opening in the cartridge and an XY alignment pin in the disk drive and in the theta (rotational) dimension by contact between an edge of the cartridge and a theta datum in the disk drive. The cartridge is positioned in the Z dimension by contact between the cartridge and at least three Z datums. The disk drive also includes a picker arm for opening a shutter on the cartridge, thereby exposing a data storage disk, as said cartridge is inserted into said disk drive.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a laminated actuator assembly and the method for making the actuator assembly. The actuator assembly is intended for use in miniature personal electronic devices, but could be used in any type of disk drive. The actuator is primarily constructed from strong, stiff, lightweight composite materials. The upper and lower planar elements of the actuator assembly, each comprising multiple composite layers, include a forward portion (12) and a rearward portion (14). A flexure member, typically positioned between the layers of composite material, allows the forward portion of each planar element to pivot in unison relative to the rear portion of each planar element. In this manner, the position of an optical pick up unit or other read/write device positioned at the distal end of the actuator assembly can be adjusted relative to the surface of a data disk. The composite and flexure planar elements are formed in arrays of multiple component pieces with aligned registration members. The registration members provide accurate alignment during assembly. Adhesive is applied in appropriate quantities to fully fill the space between the upper and lower layers, without seepage at the edges. By assembling the actuator components in arrays, the miniature actuator assemblies can be easily handled and the electronic, optic and magnetic subassemblies can be attached more easily.
