    Abstract: A torque calculator (10) and method for providing real time data that measures net torque output of a running engine (100) in a motor vehicle. Gross torque production (24) is calculated using engine speed and fueling data. Torque losses due to accessories, pumping, and friction (22, 26, 28, 30) are calculated and subtracted from gross torque production, and inertial torque is also accounted for to yield engine net running torque. The engine net running torque data and engine speed data are processed according to a filter algorithm (94) that compensates the engine net running torque data for engine speed.     Abstract: An internal combustion engine control system (10) processes data to develop desired fueling data representing a desired amount of fuel that is to be injected into the engine (18) for combustion. The desired fueling data is modified by a multiplier during a cranking, starting, and initial running phase of the engine (18), and after the engine (18) has started and begins running, modifies the multiplier by a multiplier adder. Use of the multiplier added is discontinued once the engine fuel injectors (16) have sufficiently warmed up. The multiplier adder is a function of an average of desired fueling data taken over a time interval that includes engine cranking, starting, and initial engine running.

    Abstract: A thermal screen for use with an exhaust gas recirculation system. The thermal screen is configured to direct the flow of exhaust gases that pass through an exhaust gas recirculation valve toward the tubes of an exhaust gas recirculation cooler. Moreover, the thermal screen is configured to direct the flow of exhaust gases through openings in a header of the exhaust gas recirculation cooler so as to reduce and/or prevent a front surface of the header from being directly exposed to the passing exhaust gases and the heat entrained in those gases. By minimizing and/or preventing the front surface from direct exposure to the exhaust gases, the thermal screen may reduce the thermal strain on the header that is typically associated with differences in temperatures between the front and back surfaces of the header.

    Abstract: A pressure relief valve is associated with a throttle valve to shunt flow around a throttle valve element which is selectively positionable to throttle flow through the throttle valve.     Abstract: A method of detecting ammonia in the exhaust system of an internal combustion engine includes detecting upstream and downstream NOx levels relative to the catalyst and producing respective upstream and downstream NOx signals. The method also detects a preselected engine operating condition of the engine, such as a no-combustion condition, and determines decay rates in the upstream and downstream NOx signals during the preselected engine operating condition. The method signals an ammonia slip condition in response to the decay rate of the upstream NOx signal exceeding the decay rate of the downstream NOx signal by more than a preselected amount.

    Abstract: An fresh air/exhaust gas compact mixer and method for mixing fresh air with exhaust gases, is provided. The mixer includes a main body, an air inlet for receiving fresh air fluidly connected to an air intake passage within the main body, an exhaust gas inlet for receiving exhaust fluidly connected to an exhaust gas passage within the main body. The mixer also includes a bifurcation within the air intake passage for directing the flow of air through the passage, wherein the bifurcation decreases a cross section of the air intake passage downstream from the air inlet, thereby increasing the air velocity exiting the air intake passage. The narrowed cross section creates a localized vacuum, encouraging an increased flow of exhaust gas through the mixer, and creating superior mixing of the fresh air with the exhaust gases prior to exiting the mixer.
