Technologies related to contextual use and expiration of digital content are generally described. In some examples, a receiving device may connect with a sponsoring device having the digital content. A relationship property defines a relationship context between the receiving device and the sponsoring device. The receiving device may receive the digital content from the sponsoring device and use the digital content so long as allowed, as determined with reference to the relationship property.

An Internet protocol low noise block downconverter (IP LNB) assembly, which is within a satellite dish assembly, may be operable to determine one or more baseline settings of the satellite dish assembly. The IP LNB assembly may monitor, periodically or aperiodically, one or more current settings that may correspond to the determined one or more baseline settings to identify deviations of the one or more current settings from the baseline settings. The results of the monitoring may be communicated to a satellite service provider. The satellite service provider may provide maintenance and/or service management for the satellite dish assembly based on the communicated results of the monitoring. The IP LNB assembly may determine a location setting via a GNSS module and determine an alignment setting via a directional sensor in the IP LNB assembly. The IP LNB assembly may determine a received signal strength based on a RSSI.

A satellite reception assembly may comprise a first module operable to demodulate a first one or more channels of a signal output by a direct broadcast satellite (DBS) low noise block downconverter (LNB). The first module may output a signal to a second module which may demodulate a second one or more channels of the signal output by the DBS LNB. The second module may be installed after the satellite reception assembly has been deployed upon a number of clients served by the satellite reception assembly reaching a threshold.

A television producer (104) controls (504) its rights to the content by allowing subscribers (110, 116) to select and send some content while preventing other content from being incorporated in a message. Rights can be checked at the sender site (110), at the recipient site (116), and in between by a message-transport service (504). In some situations, the recipient (116) may not have sufficient rights to view the entire message. Specifically, the recipient's subscription level may not allow access to some of the message content that was pulled from the sender's television-delivery service (104). In this case, the recipient (116) may take corrective action or may view the message with the restricted content replaced with alternative content.

There is provided a method and system for enhancing content security including a content corruptor module having an input for encoded content, a content parameter modifier coupled to the input and having outputs for modified content and fixer data, a content encoder coupled to the output for modified content and having an output for encoded modified content and a fixer data encoder coupled to the output for fixer data and having an output for encoded fixer data. The modified encoded content discourages copying as it is not usable with the corrector data. Modification can be made to a number of different parameters, for example DCT parameters, reversible wavelet coefficients, block order, motion vectors may be modified by the corruptor in a way that can be reversed in the pixel domain after motion compensation, such as reversing the frame and vectors, or offsetting them, or scaling. Quantization matrices could be altered so that the pixel data needs to be scaled. Reversible wavelet coefficients may be modified in a manner similar to DCT. Block order could also be altered so that blocks and their intra-block prediction need to be swapped

A system for displaying and a system for storing multiplexed content are also described.

One embodiment of the present invention sets forth a technique for deferring license retrieval when streaming digital media content. The perceived delay between the time a user selects the protected digital media content to when playback of the protected digital media content begins is reduced because retrieval and playback of an unprotected version of a portion of the digital media content starts before the license and protected version of the digital media content is received. The unprotected version includes fast start streams of audio and video data that may encoded at a lower bit rate than the protected version in order to quickly transfer the fast start streams from the content server to the playback device.
