Abstract:
Devices, kits and methods are provided to reduce or eliminate fecal contamination and cross-contamination and transmission of fecal-born pathogenic organisms by users employed in the food production and food preparation industries or users in a home, for example in restaurants, cruise ships, schools, hospitals, dormitories, transportation means and terminals, and government buildings, the devices and methods pertaining to a glove-like garment that is applied prior to disposal of feces and removed after disposal of toilet tissue. The glove is flushable, and in an embodiment includes means of retraction from the wrist area for inversion of the garment, followed by flushing the inverted removed glove.
Abstract:
Ratio of neutrophils to lymphocytes (NLR) is here associated with immune suppression and decreased survival times in multiple solid tumors. Based on immune cell-specific DMRs and validated cell deconvolution algorithms, the NLR in blood from glioma patients was estimated and glioma patients had elevated mdNLR scores compared to controls. The patient mdNLR scores were increased in patients with grade IV tumors compared to grade II/III. High mdNLR scores were associated with shorter survival. Candidate single (myeloid-associated) gene loci that were highly correlated with the mdNLR were identified. Single myeloid differentiation loci provide a simpler and cheaper alternative to the mdNLR, which requires complex array data. Immunomethylomics are useful and more convenient than conventional cell analysis in profiling glioma risk and survival.
Abstract:
A thermal accelerant is delivered to a tissue site and localized to modulate the shape, extent or other characteristic of RF or microwave-induced hyperthermic tissue ablation. The accelerant may be provided via an image-guided hand piece or via a lumen added to a microwave antenna, and promotes faster heating, more complete ablation and/or a more extensive treatment region to reduce recurrence of treated cancers, overcoming natural limitations, variations in tissue response and drop-off or thermal loss away from the antenna. The accelerant is delivered as a low-viscosity but heat sensitive fluid, and is fixed in place to provide regions of preferential absorption or heating. Shorter exposure times to heat the far field may allow survival of vulnerable tissue such as vessels, and multiple antennae may be used for effective treatment of irregular or large tumors.
Abstract:
A coffee appliance includes a powered cooling system integrated with and matched to a hot coffee brewer, configured to cool freshly-brewed coffee by thermal contact to chill a small batch of fresh-brewed coffee in a cooled receiving vessel. The vessel has an evaporator coil to ice the beverage. The cooling system is a robust system, a phase change refrigerant compression-type system employing a positive-displacement compressor, sized in relation to its rate of thermal cooling and the temperature of the beverage and the thermal mass and conductivity of the fluid-contacting assembly, bringing hot coffee to an ice-cold temperature, 2-5 °C, on demand and quickly. The fresh brewed, flash-cooled coffee has undiluted and undegraded flavor. An integrated appliance includes a coffee brewer and cooler in a single device, and a slide switch or valve allows the user to select hot or iced coffee.
Abstract:
Methods, compositions and cells are provided that identify and isolate a population of adult non-embryonic progenitor cells having multilineage potential, physical diameters of about 2 ?m to about 8 ?m in size or about 4 ?m to about 6 ?m, and expressing at least one of the stem cell associated genes among Oct-4, KLF-4, Nanog, Sox-2, Rex-1, GDF-3 or Stella. Methods are also provided that identify and isolate populations, which are subsets or subpopulations of progenitor adult stem cells within the population of the adult stem cells which is a heterogeneous population, the methods including contacting the adult stem cells with a ligand specific for at least one of: CD99, tetraspan, ICAM4, full-length MUC1, and truncated MUC1 receptor, in which a presence of a surface protein on the cells that bind to the ligand identifies the population which is the subset of the differentiated progenitor adult stem cells.
Abstract:
Selective electrocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) to carbon monoxide (CO) on gold (Au) nanoparticles (NPs) in 0.5 M KHCO 3 at 25 °C. Among monodisperse 4-, 6-, 8-, and 10-nm NPs tested, the 8 nm Au NPs show the maximum Faradaic efficiency (FE), up to 90% at -0.67 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest that edge sites dominate over corner sites on the Au NP surface facilitating stabilization of the reduction intermediates, such as COOH*, and the formation of CO. This mechanism is further supported by the fact that Au NPs embedded in a matrix of butyl-3methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate for more efficient COOH* stabilization exhibit even higher reaction activity (3 A/g mass activity) and selectivity (97% FE) at -0.52 V (vs. RHE). Use of monodisperse Au NPs to optimize the available reaction intermediate binding sites thus allows efficient and selective electrocatalytic reduction of CO 2 to CO.
Abstract:
Grafts, systems, methods and kits are provided for treating a subject having a defect using adult stem cells that are characterized in that the cells do not substantially induce a T cell or natural kill (NK) cell-mediated immune response in the subject. The systems, methods and kits optionally further include exogenous biological factors and energy sources such as an ultrasound device for stimulating healing of the target tissue and tissue defect and/or tissue formation.
Abstract:
An MRI contrast material includes tumor-targeting metal-loaded ferritin nanoparticles constructed with genetically modified ferritin coupled to a target-specific agent. Ferritin derived from Archaeoglobus fulgidus (AfFtn-AA) forms hollow nanocages surrounding paramagnetic or superparamagnetic metal core, storing a significantly greater quantity of iron (approximately 7,000 Fe ions per ferritin cage) or other paramagnetic or superparamagnetic metal than natural ferritins, and is conjugated via a short linker with a monoclonal antibody against a cell surface antigen overexpressed by a cancer, to selectively and efficiently attach to tumor cells to enhance MRI contrast. Significant T 2 contrast with diminished T 1 effect was observed owing to the heterogeneous nanoconjugate distribution when bound to cells. In a treatment method, after imaging, an external stimulus heats the cell-bound agent to release the metal and selectively destroy the targeted cells. The enhanced imaging and release of toxic metal ions provides simultaneous early detection and treatment.

Methods using DNA Methylation arrays are provided for identifying a cell or mixture of cells and for quantification of alterations in distribution of cells in blood or in tissues, and for diagnosing, prognosing and treating disease conditions, particularly cancer. The methods use fresh and archival samples.
Abstract:
Methods, compositions, devices and kits having a novel chromatographic material are provided herein for separating and identifying organic molecules and compounds, for example molecules and compounds containing electron rich functional groups such as carbon-carbon double bonds. The methods, compositions, and kits include a metal-thiolate chromatographic medium (MTCM) with a sulfur-containing functional group or a metal-selenolate chromatographic medium (MSCM) comprising a selenium-containing functional group covalently attached to a support medium, such that the sulfur-containing functional group or selenium-containing functional group is bound to at least one metal atom. The MTCM and/or MSCM has affinity and specificity to compounds having one or more carbon-carbon double bonds, and performs a highly efficient and rapid separation of samples yielding non-overlapping peaks of purified materials compared to traditional media.
