Abstract:
Moisture-curable, one component adhesives contain an isocyanate-terminated prepolymer, a low molecular weight polyisocyanate compound, a hydrolysable mercaptosilane, a urethane catalyst and a carbon black filler. The adhesives exhibit an excellent combination of high modulus, excellent hydrolytic and heat stability, and high sag resistance.
Abstract:
An improved one part moisture curable composition is comprised of an isocyanate functional prepolymer, a cyclic silane, a filler and a catalyst. The adhesive composition is particularly useful for adhering sag bent and press bent glasses having frits applied to the periphery of the glass such as used in vehicle windshields.
Abstract:
A one part moisture curable adhesive composition having improved heat stability is comprised of a silyl terminated polymer, a catalyst and a particular phosphite compound. The phosphite compound has three groups wherein at least two of the groups are aryl groups, but preferably all three of the groups are aryl groups. The one part moisture curable adhesive composition is useful in severe applications such as solar panels and automotive and building window glass.
Abstract:
A reactive plasticizer is comprised of a reaction product of an isocyanate having two isocyanate groups and a linear polyether monol. The monol has a weight average molecular weight of about 500 to about 2000 grams/mole. The amount of isocyanate and linear polyether monol are such that the isocyanate groups are in molar excess of the amount of alcohol groups and the reaction product has an isocyanate content of 0.1% to 1% by weight of the reaction product. The reactive plasticizer is particularly useful for formulating one part moisture cured polyurethane adhesives comprised of the reactive filler, an isocyanate terminated prepolymer, filler and a catalyst.
Abstract:
An uncured adhesive contains 2 to 10 weight percent of particles of a semi-crystalline organic material, preferably a polyester having a number-average molecular weight of 2000 to 10,000, a hydroxyl number of 10 to 60, and a melting temperature of 50 to 125 °C. The adhesive is applied by heating it just prior to application, to melt the particles. After application, the adhesive is cooled to below the melting temperature of the semi-crystalline organic material, and then cured. The process allows the adhesive to be stored and pumped at ambient temperatures, due to the moderate viscosity of the material. Upon melting and re-cooling the semi-crystalline organic material, the adhesive assumes a high yield stress that imparts very good wash-off resistance. In preferred embodiments, the adhesive composition includes an epoxy resin and an epoxy curing agent.
Abstract:
Multilayer prepregs are formed by stacking layers of unidirectional prepregs in which continuous reinforcing fibers are aligned in a single direction. The unidirectional prepregs are made by impregnating aligned tows of a reinforcing fiber with a solid thermosetting resin that softens at a temperature below its cure temperature. The layers of the stack are bonded together by softening and then re-cooling the resin portion of the individual prepreg layers. The multilayer prepreg is then molded and cured to form a composite part.
