    Abstract: The disclosures relates to methods for suppressing beta-amyloid 1-42 levels in the hippocampus of a subject, methods for reducing and/or preventing the formation of amyloid plaques in the hippocampus of a subject, and methods for improving cognitive function and/or memory retention in a subject. The methods include administering an effective amount of crude caffeine to the subject. The crude caffeine is prepared from a coffee decaffeination process and contains a combination of caffeine and coffee-based biologically active compounds. Crude caffeine is therefore believed to slow down the progression of plaque-associated dementia, including Alzheimer's Disease (AD), through an Aβ-dependent mechanism and can be used a therapeutic agent against plaque-associated dementia.
