摘要: Technology disclosed herein provides a reduced transition between the edge of a rigid vascular dilator and the distal edge of the accompanying introducer sheath. Disclosed dilators can be segmented into two or more primarily longitudinally extending parts, can have rigid circumferential or semi-circumferential leading shoulders to minimize the transition between the dilator and the sheath edge, and can contain internal recesses to allow sequential retraction of segments once the introducer sheath is delivered to a target chamber. With this technology, vascular introducer sheaths can be introduced percutaneously into a broad range of diseased target vessels and chambers with reduced damage to the wall of the vessel or chamber, and with reduced damage to the distal end of the introducer sheath.

摘要: A cooling syringe and method are provided for inducing selective hypothermia of a body tissue during minimally invasive surgery. The cooling syringe includes an elongated, hollow housing configured to receive a cooling substance, the housing having a proximal end and a distal end. An actuator is at least partially received within the housing, the actuator including an elongated shaft having a proximal end and a distal end. The actuator includes a handle portion at the shaft proximal end and an end cap received on the shaft distal end, the shaft and end cap together forming a plunger. A guidance cap having a central channel is received on the shaft and disposed at a proximal end thereof. The actuator is movable with respect to the guidance cap and within the housing to dispense the cooling substance from the housing distal end.

摘要: There is provided a method for treating an individual with cardiovascular disease, including the step of administering a therapeutically effective amount of protein phosphatase inhibitor and analogues thereof, to the individual after the onset of cardiac ischemia. Also provided is a method of treating an individual with cardiovascular disease by selectively inhibiting protein phosphatase activity in the heart. A composition for the treatment of heart failure, the composition including an inhibitor of PP1 and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier is also provided. There is provided a sequence encoding inhibitor-2.

摘要: Capsules, emplacement apparatus, and associated methods for establishing a capsule within tissue are described herein. The emplacement apparatus may be catheter-based or implemented in a handheld unit. The emplacement apparatus serves to introduced an encapsulating membrane in a collapsed condition into the tissue, and then to expand the encapsulating membrane within the tissue into a capsule by injection of fill material into the encapsulating membrane. Other than being capable of injection through the emplacement apparatus, the fill material may be selected and formulated to achieve such mechanical and biological properties within the encapsulating membrane after injection as are desired to achieve the therapeutic effect sought for the patient. Mechanically, the fill material within the encapsulating membrane after injection may be a liquid, a semi-solid such as a gel, or a solid such as a cross-linked polymer. The fill material may or may not be sealed within the encapsulating membrane.
