Abstract:
A method and system for allowing a media player to transfer digital audio to an accessory is disclosed. The method and system comprises sending a play command to the media player; returning information about the media player; and providing digital audio to the accessory based upon the information about the media player. In a system and method in accordance with the present invention a plurality of commands allow a media player to transfer digital audio to an accessory. These commands are used by the media player to gather a list of supported sample rates from the accessory and to inform the accessory of the media player's information.

Abstract:
Embodiments of the present invention provide systems and methods for launching an application in response to a launch request from an accessory. In some embodiments, the mobile computing device can determine whether it is in a state that allows launching of an application and/or can determine whether the application or application type requested in the launch command is available for launching. In response to the request, and if the mobile computing device is capable, the mobile computing device can launch the application. The mobile computing device can also send a positive acknowledgment message to the accessory indicating that the application may be launched. An open communication session message may also be sent to the accessory. In response thereto the accessory can open a communication session and interoperate with the application.
Abstract:
Systems and methods are provided that enable identification of an accessory device or other peripheral device via a serial communication link. An electronic device (e.g., a media player or portable media device) may identify an accessory device using a serial communication link when the accessory device is attached or coupled to the electronic device. Based on serial communications, for example, the electronic device may discover and identify an accessory device to determine whether one or more preferences or functionalities should be set or enabled. The electronic device may also discover whether an accessory device or its manufacturer, distributor, or retailer is authorized or licensed to enable certain functionalities or set certain preferences when connect to the electronic device. Therefore, aspects of a serial communication link that may already exist in many electronic devices for data communication usage may be repurposed to provide identification or authorization of accessories or other peripheral devices.
Abstract:
A portable media device (PMD) can produce an isochronous audio/video experience when the PMD provides a digital audio signal to the accessory while displaying analog video on an accessory independent display. The accessory can communicate audio latency information to the PMD. The PMD can delay a video portion of a presentation, relative to providing the digital audio signal to the accessory, based on the audio latency information communicated by the accessory. As a result, the user may perceive an isochronous presentation of the audio and video portions of the presentation.

Abstract:
Embodiments of the present invention provide various communication techniques for communication between a mobile computing device and an accessory. An accessory protocol that is generic to the mobile computing device can be used for some communication. An application executing at the mobile computing device can communicate with the accessory using an application communication protocol. In some embodiments, the application communication protocol can be different from the accessory communication protocol. In other embodiments the application protocol may only be recognized by the application and the accessory. In some embodiments, messages conforming to an application protocol can be communicated between the application and the accessory by packaging the messages inside a message conforming to the accessory communication protocol.
