Abstract:
An improved tape delivery assembly (10) for delivering a turn-up tape across a moving web of paper being wound onto a spool, the assembly (10) being part of a paper web turn-up system, the tape being used to sever and transfer the leading edge of the cut paper web onto an empty spool. The track body (13) of the tape delivery assembly (10) extending across the paper web comprises a dual internal pathway, having a primary longitudinal channel (12) and a secondary longitudinal channel (15) through which a primary (21) or secondary tape (22) is passed, respectively. A primary tape dispenser assembly (14) delivers the primary tape (21) into the primary channel (12) and a secondary tape dispenser assembly (14) delivers the secondary tape (22) into the secondary channel (15). A braking mechanism (30) is provided to retard travel of the primary (21) and secondary tapes (22) for removal from the track body (13).
Abstract:
A paper web transfer tape (10) having a cover flap (20) joined longitudinally to a carrier member (11) along the trailing edge (18) such that the cover flap (20) opens in a hinged manner to expose a pressure sensitive adhesive layer (12) on the carrier member (11) for adherence to an advancing paper web (50) for severance and transfer of the paper web (50) onto an empty spool (52). The transfer tape (10) is adhered to an empty spool (52). The cover flap (20) is opened by air resistance encountered during rotation of the spool (52), by providing an adhesive tab member (30) on the exterior of the cover flap, (20) that initiates opening upon adhesion of the tab member (30) to the reel drum (51), or by providing a blast of pressurized air against the leading edge (19) of the transfer tape (10).
Abstract:
A device for applying a strip (37) of double-sided adhesive to a surface (10), from a supply roll of composite tape (20) having a release liner (21) to which the double-sided adhesive strip (37) is attached, a press roller (14) to press the adhesive strip onto a transfer roller (13) having a poor affinity for adhesive strip (37) but a greater affinity than the release liner (21) to remove the adhesive strip (37) from the release liner (21) and apply the strip (37) to the surface (10), a roller (16) to wind up the release tape (21) and a selectively releasable stop (17, 31, 30, 41 or 17, 31, 32, 47 or 17, 31, 32, 47' or 51, 52, 32, 47") for permitting or preventing movement of the composite tape.
Abstract:
An improved system in a paper making process of forming and dewatering fiber/aqueous dispersion (44) by submerged drainage in which air does not penetrate the fiber/aqueous dispersion (44) nor the paper web as it is being formed; the dewatering being accomplished by altering the natural tension of the water meniscus so as to induce enhanced drainage of water from the aqueous dispersion (44) of paper making fibers, especially in the wetter end of the system.
Abstract:
System for cutting a travelling web (20) of paper being wound on a spool (24) and transferring the cut edge to an empty spool (27) to continue the winding; including a drive roll (36), a cutting tape (33); an applicator (46-50) applies a short length of adhesive, a sensor (51, 52) determines the passage of the forward end of the tape (33), another sensor (53, 55) detects the adhesive, a brake (59) clamps the tape, a cutter (41) cuts the tape to an appropriate length to perform the operation of cutting the web (20), and a guideway switch (65, 66) shunts off to a waste collection area a length of cutting tape (33) having no adhesive on its forward end.
Abstract:
An apparatus (15) and method for cutting a travelling paper web (20) winding on a spool (21) and transferring web (20) onto an empty spool (23) by attaching a cutting tape to empty spool (23), characterized by: (1) a tape dispenser (16) supplying repulpable paper fiber stiff tape (24); (2) an elongated guideway (28) having an open end (49) through which tale (24) is fed to the opposite end (50), the ends being adjacent the side edges of web (20); (3) a cutter (38) to partially cut the tape (24) adjacent end (49); and (4) a friction brake (39) engaging tape (24) between the cutter (38) and end (49) to cause tape (24) to completely sever thereat as the tape is spirally wound about the empty spool.

Abstract:
A torn paper web capture system that is a mechanism for securing a band, tape or strap (22), preferably composed of paper, across a paper roll (12) as the roll (12) is rotating. A sensor means detects the torn paper web (11) and initiates both the shut down of rotation of the paper roll (12) and the release of the band (22). The band (22) resides within a guide track (21), the track (21) being generally C-shaped in cross-section. Upon contact with the spool journal or similar rotating member (13) the end of the band (23) adheres and is wrapped around the rotating member (13). This wrapping action takes up the slack in the band (22) and pulls it from the guide track (21) and against the paper web (11), thereby securing the loose end (14) of the paper web (11). The contact between the band (22) and the rotating member (13) may be initiated in multiple ways, such as with a nip roller (31), an actuating shoe member (33), or the like.

Abstract:
A bale banding machine having an overhead press head that vertically translates relative to the band guide track and the bale being banded The band is directed through a stationary band feeding guide assembly into a band receiving guide assembly mounted on the translating press head assembly The stationary band feeding guide assembly defines an enclosed channel having an end with a feed guide pivoting member in a biased closed position until the press head lowers causing a feed guide pivoting member follower cam reaction to a descending press head cam wedge, further causing the feed guide pivoting member to pivot away from the extended band Simultaneously, the head guide pivoting member pivots upward from the band so the band is no longer retained within the small guide path previously defined by the feeding and receiving guide assemblies allowing the translating head to lower several inches without shearing the band
