Abstract:
A structure providing compliance and sealing between ceramic or ceramic composite (CMC) part and a metallic part has an interface component for centering the CMC part in the metallic part, thus reducing thermal stress motion of the CMC component. In gas turbine engine applications, the structure comprises a CMC blade track inserted in a clip placed within a metallic hanger. The clip provides for radial compliance and secures controlled leakage of cooling air required to ensure that acceptable temperatures are maintained for the metallic structures. A washer is positioned adjacent to the clip provide for axial orientation of the blade track.
Abstract:
A gas turbine engine having a combustor is disclosed in which a heat exchanger is disposed within the combustor. The heat exchanger can take the form of a fuel/air heat exchanger. In one form the heat exchanger includes a path for cooling air to be conveyed to a location external to the combustor. Cooled cooling air carried through the path can be created through action of heat transfer from the cooling air to a fuel flowing in the heat exchanger. The heat exchanger can include a fuel vaporizer in one form.
Abstract:
One embodiment is an apparatus comprising a first rotational component including an elongated connecting element fixed thereto and extending axially therefrom through a second rotational component to an end structure. The connecting element is connected to the end structure to compress the second rotational component between the end structure and the first rotational component.
Abstract:
Devices and systems used to inspect and evaluate components. Some embodiments include an imaging system, positioning system, and controller. A robotic manipulation can be provided to manipulate the component. Some embodiments include an illumination system. A graphical user interface can be used to develop and/or run inspection protocols. A fuzzy logic analysis can be coupled with one or more devices/systems to provide evaluation of an inspection.
Abstract:
A method for determining the speed of at least one rotating fan, such as a propeller, through sensing pressure waves generated by the blades of the fan. An apparatus operable to execute the method is also disclosed. The apparatus includes a fan having a hub portion and a plurality of blades extending radially outward from the hub portion. The apparatus also includes an engine operable to rotate the fan about an axis of rotation. The apparatus also includes a sensor spaced from the fan along the axis of rotation. The sensor is positioned to sense at least one physical condition that is external of the engine and is changed by rotation of the plurality of blades. The sensor is operable to emit a signal corresponding to at least one physical condition. The apparatus also includes a processor operably engaged with the engine and the sensor. The processor is operable to receive the signal from the sensor and change the operation of the engine in response to the signal to change a speed of the fan.

Abstract:
An article may include a substrate that comprises a nickel alloy. The substrate may include a modified subsurface region and a bulk region. The modified subsurface region may include a first composition and the bulk region may include a second composition different than the first composition. The modified subsurface region may include at least one of a reactive element or a noble metal, and the modified subsurface region comprises a thickness of less than about 0.3 µm measured in a direction substantially normal to a surface of the substrate. The modified subsurface region may be formed by depositing a layer including at least one of the reactive element or the noble metal in a layer on a surface of the substrate and introducing the at least one of the reactive element or the noble metal into the modified subsurface region using ion bombardment.

Abstract:
A system is disclosed including a three-dimensional object having a non- conforming region, and a photogrammetry device adapted to scan the three- dimensional object. The system further includes optical reference targets and a controller structured to perform functions of repairing the three-dimensional object. The controller commands the photogrammetry device to scan the three-dimensional object, and calculates a nominal surface location and contour for the three-dimensional object. The controller further commands the photogrammetry device to scan the non- conforming region of the three-dimensional object, and calculates a material removal tool path comprising a path adapted to remove material from the object located beyond the nominal surface location and contour. The controller generates a solid model of the damaged region of the object based on the nominal surface location and contour, and computes a material addition tool path according to the solid model.
