An apparatus such as a television signal receiver (20), radio or other device is capable of performing a self-diagnostic test for an emergency alert function. According to an exemplary embodiment, the apparatus (20) includes a memory (27) operative to store test data associated with the emergency alert function. A decoder (26) is operative to decode the test data to generate test signals. A processor (27) is operative to process the test signals to detect an operating state of the emergency alert function.

A method of operating a digital program playback device, including: receiving, via a first communications network, a data stream including an encrypted data portion representative of a program; identifying, from the received data stream, an identifier associated with the program; transmitting the program identifier and a device identifier associated with the digital program playback device to an authorization device via a second communications network; receiving, via the second communications network, a decryption key in response to the transmission; and, decrypting the data stream using the decryption key and generating an output signal for playback of the program.

An apparatus and a method for selecting one of a plurality of digital video channels and analog video channels in response to user selection, in particular, when operating in a digital recording mode. The user may select the channel using either a channel scan mode, in which the user selection causes the selection of the next channel in a channel sequence, or a direct channel mode, in which the user enters a specific channel number to be selected. When operating in the recording mode, and the apparatus receives a channel selection in the channel scan mode, the apparatus selects the next digital channel in the sequence and skips any intervening analog channels. When the operating in the recording mode, and the apparatus receives a channel selection in the direct channel selection mode, the apparatus selects the channels and terminates the recording mode if the selected channel is an analog channel and maintains the recording mode if the selected channel is a digital channel. The invention also provides a method for controlling the content in the buffer of a storage device as the user scans through major and minor television channels.

A method for generating an on-screen menu comprising menu buttons (BG81,...,BG86') and other menu items, e.g. help text, is characterized in that one or more groups of menu buttons or menu items are defined, wherein a group comprises one or more menu buttons or menu items and has associated a defined area on the screen. A state is assigned to a button, the state being "enabled" or "disabled", wherein only an enabled button or item may be displayed, and wherein within a group not more than one button or item may be enabled. The state of a button can be changed by commands associated with other buttons.

An illumination system is provided for combining two or more light sources (13, 14). A plurality of light sources radiate random polarization light (1, 5). A plurality of collecting light pipes (11, 12) corresponds to the plurality of light sources. Each collecting light pipe has an entrance end (11a, 12a) disposed towards the respective light source. The collecting light pipes are laterally offset and overlapping opposite their respective entrance ends. A combining light pipe (16) is disposed perpendicular to the collecting light pipes. A polarizing beam splitter (20, 21) and a mirror (22, 23) are sequentiallly arranged in each collecting light pipe essentially opposite the entrance end directing a first polarization light (2, 6) and a second polarization light (4, 8), respectively upwards towards the combining light pipe. The combining light pipe has an entrance end (16a) overlying the polarizing beam splitter and mirror of each collecting light pipe to collect and combine the light from each polarizing beam splitter and mirror.

The present invention relates to a device (1) and a method for the preparation of data (21) to be sent as a continuous stream via a communication network. The device comprises means for obtainment (11) of the data originating from a database (2), which contains at least two data stream entities (Ej) for data associated respectively with different transmission throughputs (24), means of transfer (12) of these data to a sending system (3), means of connection (13) to one of these entities, and means of switching (14) of the means of connection from one of the entities to another. The preparation device also comprises means of regular addition (15) to the data transferred, of error correction codes (22). The means of switching switch from a first entity to a second entity of greater throughput, when this augmented data stream (DATA) reaches the sum of the sending throughput associated with the second entity and of an additional throughput (possibly zero) associated with an initial input of error correction codes of the second entity, and the means of addition reinitialize the addition of the codes to this initial input upon this switching. Application to streaming over IP network.
