A process for making multi-color dispersion, a dispersion made thereof and a coating composition comprising the dispersion are provided. The process comprises: contacting a first colorant, a first aqueous dispersion of polymer particles, a first polysaccharide and a second polysaccharide to make a first colorant dispersion; contacting the first colorant dispersion with a composition to obtain a dispersion of protected first colorant particles; obtaining a dispersion of protected second colorant particles by the same way; mixing the two dispersions to obtain a multi-color dispersion.

The present invention provides a new and simple processed stable colloidal silica containing polymeric binders, without modification, and to get to a novel coating composition, especially, aqueous coating composition that has more efficient stain resistance/removal function and also under a reasonable and controllable cost.

Provided is an aqueous coating composition, comprising: (a) an aqueous polymer dispersion, wherein the polymer comprises, based on the weight of the polymer, from 2%to 8%by weight of structural units of an α,β-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer, and from 0.05%to 1.8%by weight of structural units of an ethylenically unsaturated silane functional monomer; (b) an aqueous solution of a zinc ammonia complex salt; and (c) from 60%to 90%by weight of a filler, based on the total weight of the aqueous coating composition; wherein the weight ratio of the zinc ions to the polymer is in the range of 0.7%to 6%. The aqueous coating composition has a long pot life and good adhesion to a substrate. Also provided is a process for preparing the coating composition.

A paint formulation comprising a binder dispersion and a hydrophobically modified alkali-swellable emulsion. The wet weight ratio of the binder dispersion to the hydrophobically modified alkali-swellable emulsion is from 1:3 to 1:10. The binder dispersion comprises by dry weight based on total dry weight of the binder dispersion, from 0.1% to 80% of polymer particles, and from 0.1% to 5% of a polysaccharide; and the hydrophobically modified alkali-swellable emulsion comprises by dry weight based on total dry weight of the hydrophobically modified alkali-swellable emulsion, from 30% to 50% of an α, β-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer, and from 30% to 60% of an α, β-ethylenically unsaturated nonionic monomer. A process for preparing the paint formulation comprising mixing the binder dispersion with the hydrophobically modified alkali-swellable emulsion under stirring.

A method of preparing a polymer dispersion comprising (i) contacting an aqueous dispersion of de-ionized acidic colloidal silica particles with a first mixture of monomers to form a combination;(ii) polymerizing such combination at an initial pH of from 2 to 5 to at least 90% in completion;and (iii) adding a second mixture of monomers at a rate substantially equal to the rate of consumption of such second mixture of monomers to continue and complete the polymerization. The present invention further provides a polymer dispersion made from the above method.

Provided is a new process of preparation for PUA with superior mechanical performance, such as elongation, and tensile strength. The process is solvent free, smooth, and robust. PU prepolymer prepared according to the process has low viscosity, and contains no particulate DMPA.
