A paint coat composition useful in multilayer paint systems contains (a) a binder that consists of a water-dilutable polyurethane resin having an acid number from 10 to 60 and a numerical mean molecular weight from 4,000 to 25,000, preferably from 8,000 to 25,000. In order to produce the resin, a polyester and/or polyether polyol (aa) having a numerical mean molecular weight from 400 to 5,000 or a mixture of such polyester and/or polyether polyols is reacted with (bb) a polyisocyanate or a mixture of polyisocyanates; (cc) a compound having in the molecule at least one group reactive with isocyanate groups and at least one group capable of forming anions, or a mixture of such compounds, and optionally with (dd) an organic compound having hydroxyl and/or amino groups with a molecular weight from 40 to 400 or a mixture of such compounds. The thus obtained reaction product is then at least partially neutralised. The paint coat composition also contains (b) pigments and/or extenders, the ratio between binder and pigments lying between 0.5:1 and 1.5:1.

The invention relates to a process for the production of a multilayered coating on a substrate surface, during which (A) an aqueous coating composition (ii) containing an aqueous polymer dispersion in the form of a film-forming agent is applied to a substrate surface as a base layer (II) and coated with an aqueous base coating (i); (B) the composition applied in step (A) is dried; (C) a suitable, transparent covering coating composition is applied to the resulting base layer (II); and (D) the base layers (I) and (II) are baked along with the covering layer. The process is characterised in that the base coating composition (ii) contains an aqueous polymer dispersion which contains (x) an acrylate polymer based on 30 to 60 % by weight of C1-C8-alkyl(meth)acrylate monomers, 30 to 60 % by weight of vinyl aromatic monomers and 0.5 to 10 % by weight of (meth)acrylic acid and (y) a thickener acting in a non-associative manner and containing an acrylate copolymer based on C1-C6-alkyl(meth)acrylate and (meth)acrylic acid.

Verfahren zum Beschichten von Substraten (2) mit Oberflächen (2.1) unterschiedlichen Bunttons mit einer transparenten oder pigmentierten Beschichtung (4.3), bei dem ein transparenter oder pigmentierter, mit aktinischer Strahlung härtbarer Beschichtungsstoff (4.1) auf die bunten oder unbunten Oberflächen (2.1) appliziert wird, wonach man die resultierende Schicht (4.2) mit aktinischer Strahlung härtet, wobei die Gesamtdosis D an eingestrahlter aktinischer Strahlung, die im Bereich von 500 bis 5.000 mJcm-2 liegt, in Abhängigkeit vom jeweiligen Buntton der Oberfläche (2.1) oder der pigmentierten Schicht (4.2) eingestellt und begrenzt wird, sowie Vorrichtung (1) gemäß Figur 1 zur Durchführung des Verfahrens, umfassend - ggf. eine Fördervorrichtung (3) zum Transport der Substrate (2), - eine Station (4) zum Applizieren des Beschichtungsstoffs (4.1), - eine Station (5) zur Härtung der Schicht (4.2), wodurch die transparente oder pigmentierte Beschichtung (4.3) resultiert, wobei die Station (5) eine Vorrichtung (6) zur Regelung und Begrenzung der Gesamtdosis D an eingestrahlter aktinischer Strahlung aufweist.
