Abstract: A method of applying a pattern to a nonplanar surface. A stamp has a major surface with pattern elements having a lateral dimension of greater than 0 and less than about 5 microns. The major surface of the stamp has a functionalizing molecule with a functional group selected to chemically bind to the nonplanar surface. The stamp is positioned to initiate rolling contact with the nonplanar surface, and contacts the nonplanar surface to form a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of the functionalizing material thereon and impart the arrangement of pattern elements thereto. The major surface of the stamp is translated with respect to the nonplanar surface such that: a contact pressure is controlled at an interface between the stamping surfaces and the nonplanar surface, and a contact force at the interface is allowed to vary while the stamping surfaces and the nonplanar surface are in contact with each other.

Abstract: Described herein is methacrylate copolymer derived from: a (meth)acrylate monomer comprising a second terminal olefin group; an alkyl methacrylate monomer wherein the alkyl group comprises 1 to 4 carbon atoms; a mono(meth)acrylate monomer comprising a low-surface-energy group, wherein the low-surface-energy group comprises a perfluorinated alkyl group, a perfluorinated polyether group, or a silicone group; and a RAFT agent. Such copolymers can be used to make liquid compositions, which may then be used to generate tooling for nanoimprint or transfer lithography.

Abstract: Processes for automatic registration between a solid circuit die and electrically conductive interconnects, and articles or devices made by the same are provided. The solid circuit die is disposed at a registration area of a substrate. Fluid channels extend into the registration area and have a portion underneath the bottom surface of the solid circuit die. Electrically conductive traces are formed by flowing a conductive liquid in the channels toward contact pads on the bottom surface of the circuit die to obtain the automatic registration.

Abstract: A method of patterning a cylindrical tool, including providing a stamp including a base and a layer of solid state ionic conductor thereon, applying a negative of a predetermined pattern of features on a major surface of the solid state ionic conductor, providing a cylindrical tool having a metallic surface positioned proximate the stamp, and applying an electric field between the metallic surface and a cathode while moving the stamp against the metallic surface in rolling line contact so as to impart the predetermined pattern of features onto the metallic surface, wherein the cathode is either the base or a conductive element positioned adjacent to the base. The positive of the predetermined pattern of features may include a multiplicity of nano-sized features.

Abstract: Methods of forming an array of patterns on a substrate are provided. A replication medium is coated onto a relief structure of a patterned template and solidified. Patterned templates with the replication medium are transferred to an array of sub-regions of a tiling region of a substrate, where heat and/or radiation can be applied to the replication medium. The patterned templates are then removed from the substrate to form a patterned surface structure on the substrate.

Abstract: Methods of forming an array of patterns on a substrate are provided. An array of protective tiles formed from a protectant resin is provided to cover an array of sub-regions on the substrate. An array of patterns is formed on the substrate by sequentially repeating steps (i) and (ii) for each sub-region: (i) removing the protective tile from one of the sub-regions to expose the first major surface underneath; and (ii) forming a pattern on the exposed first major surface within the one of the sub-regions.

Abstract: A stretchable conductor includes a substrate with a first major surface and an elongate wire, wherein the substrate is an elastomeric material, the elongate wire is on the first major surface of the substrate, the wire includes a first end and a second end, and further includes at least one arcuate region between the first end and the second end. At least one portion of the arcuate region of the wire in the region has a first surface area portion embedded in the surface of the substrate and a second surface area portion unembedded on the substrate and exposed in an amount sufficient to render at least an area of the substrate in the region electrically conductive. The unembedded second surface portion of the arcuate region may lie above or below a plane of the substrate. Additionally, different methods of preparing said stretchable conductor are disclosed. Composite articles including said stretchable conductor in durable electrical contact with a conductive fabric are also disclosed.
