Abstract:
A container (100) for holding pourable contents includes an exterior surface, an interior surface, and a reclosable pour spout. The pour spout includes a flange member (20) having first and second sides. The second side of the flange member is secured to the outer periphery of an aperture in the wall of the container (100). The spout also includes an extension (24) which is connected to and extends outwardly from the first side of the flange member. A stem (26) is connected to and extends inwardly from the second side of the flange member and into the container. At least a portion (25) of the stem is turned outwardly and toward the interior surface of the wall to which the flange member is secured to produce a mechanical engagement between the turned stem and the container which tends to resist any tendency of the pour spout to be pulled from the container.
Abstract:
A method of and apparatus for attaching a spout (4) to a planar portion of an article (2) such as a milk or juice carton, which may be integrated into conventional carton forming and filling machines, includes the steps of heating a stem (6) of a spout, applying a bonding agent to a flange (7) on the spout, positioning the spout in a predetermined relation to a spout applicator (80), positioning a carton with a hole provided in a predetermined relation to the spout applicator and attaching the spout to the carton where the heated stem (6) is deformed to mechanically engage the carton about the hole. An apparatus to accomplish the method is also disclosed.
Abstract:
A spout (S) is attached to a wall (C) of an article, such as a paperboard container, by pushing a stem (B) of a spout longitudinally through a pre-formed hole (H) in the article and against an inclined face of a flare tool (74) so that a portion of the stem is bent laterally outwardly (79) and into the path of a staking tool. The staking tool (74) is displaced so that the face thereof bends a laterally outer section (79) of the bent portion against the wall of the article (A) while leaving a laterally inner section of the bent portion spaced longitudinally from the wall.

Abstract:
A method and apparatus for attaching a spout (7a) to a carton (5). A conveyor (10) moves the carton successively to three stations. At the first station (20), a hole punch (100) punches a hole. At the second station (22) a glue application (200) applies adhesive to the bonding site. At the third station (24), a spout attaching assembly (300) applies a spout to the prepared site.
