Abstract: A microfluidic system is presented that includes a cartridge, a container, and a lid for the container. The cartridge includes a plurality of microfluidic channels coupled to one or more chambers. The container holds dry chemicals and includes a housing with a first opening and a second opening smaller than the first opening. The container is designed to be inserted into an opening of the cartridge, such that the container is independently secured within the opening. The insertion of the container allows for the container to be fluidically coupled with a microfluidic channel of the plurality of microfluidic channels via the second opening. The lid includes a column that extends from the lid into the container.

Abstract: A system and method for eluting a sample from a swab are presented. The system includes a chamber dimensioned to receive at least a portion of the length of at least one swab, a fluidic channel connected to the chamber, and an actuator. The chamber has at least one wall being a flexible film. The fluidic channel is configured to at least one of introduce and expel liquids from the chamber. The actuator is configured to contact an outer surface of the flexible film such that movement of the actuator against the outer surface of the flexible film causes a respective movement of the at least one swab when the at least one swab is disposed next to an inner surface of the flexible film. The respective movement of the at least one swab elutes the sample from the at least one swab into the chamber.

Abstract: A sepsis detection system includes a first subsystem configured to detect a presence of an infection in a patient, a second subsystem configured to detect a presence of a dysregulated host response in the patient, a third subsystem configured to detect organ dysfunction in the patient, a fourth subsystem configured to detect antimicrobial resistance (AMR) of a pathogen in the patient, and a processing device. The first, second, third, and fourth subsystems and the processing device are communicatively coupled together via a network. The processing device is configured to determine a presence of sepsis in the patient based on the presence of the infection, the presence of the dysregulated host response, and clinical data indicative of the organ dysfunction in the patient. The subsystems utilize at least one of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) processing, Raman spectroscopy, clinical data, electronic health record (EHR) data, and antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST).

Abstract: A fluidic testing system is presented that includes a plurality of test chambers, a plurality of inlet channels, and a fluidic network that connects the inlet channels to one or more other chambers. The plurality of test chambers are each characterized by a length and a hydraulic diameter. The length of each test chamber is aligned substantially parallel to a gravity vector. Each of the test chambers has only one opening disposed along the length of the corresponding test chamber. Additionally, each of the test chambers is coupled via its respective opening to only one of the plurality of inlet channels.

Abstract: A system for at least one of homogenization and lysis of a sample includes one or more walls forming an enclosed chamber, a permanent magnet within the enclosed chamber, a magnet guide, and one or more magnets located outside the chamber. The enclosed chamber has an inlet and one or more fluidic connections configured to introduce at least the sample into the chamber. The permanent magnet has a positive pole and a negative pole. The magnet guide is configured to laterally guide the permanent magnet between a first position and a second position and maintain a substantially constant orientation of the permanent magnet during the movement. Movement of the magnets outside the chamber changes a magnetic field between the one or more magnets and the permanent magnet. The permanent magnet moves between the first and second positions in response to the changing magnetic field.
