A method includes spraying a liquid including polymer and a gas substantially inert to the liquid respectively from a first and second orifice of a nozzle into air to form mist of beads. The beads then are collected with a collecting medium at a temperature in a range from about -10˚C to about 80˚C. The collecting medium includes at least one of water and alcohols.

A method comprises: contacting a sample solution comprising a tagged protein with a labeled binder bindable to a tag of the tagged protein; contacting the sample solution with a binding material bindable to the labeled binder which is not bound with the tag; and determining a concentration of the tagged protein in the sample solution according to a signal change before and after contacting the sample solution with the binding material. An associated apparatus is also described.

A method for forming polymer microparticles is disclosed. The method comprises spraying a liquid comprising a thermally-gelling polymer from a first orifice of a nozzle into air to form gelled microparticles, and collecting the gelled microparticles with a collecting device. The nozzle is positioned to have a central axis of the first orifice at a tilt angle in a range from about 10 degrees to about 170 degrees relative to a direction of gravity. The collecting device comprises at least two collecting units at different distances from the first orifice of the nozzle in a horizontal direction perpendicular to the direction of gravity. Each of the collecting unit is loaded with a liquid collecting medium. A system for forming polymer microparticles is also disclosed.

The present invention relates to a filter element and a method for manufacturing thereof. The method comprises: Providing the core tube; and rolling a membrane around the core tube. The membrane comprises a porous substrate and a filter layer on top of the porous substrate. The present invention also relates to the corresponding filter element. The filter element relating to the present invention is able to accommodate more membranes inside the same volume, resulting in high throughput and high salt rejection.

Disclosed is a method for the recovery of nucleic acids from a solid support, the method comprising the steps, in any suitable order, of: a) providing a solid support at least a region of which is absorbent and impregnated with a chaotropic agent; b) combining a biological sample, possibly including nucleic acids, with the region; c) washing the region in a washing buffer solution; d) simultaneously heating and agitating the region in a further buffer solution; e) separating the region from the further buffer solution; f) extracting at least a portion of any remaining further buffer solution from the region to provide an extracted buffer solution; g) combining the further buffer solution and the extracted buffer solution portion; and h) subsequently processing the combined buffer solutions in order to amplify any nucleic acids in said combined solution. A method comprises: sorbing a sample solution comprising nucleic acids to a sample receiving portion of a quartz fiber filter by contacting the sample solution with the sample receiving portion; and washing the sample receiving portion while keeping most of nucleic acids around the sample receiving portion by flowing a wash solution through the sample receiving portion under a wicking force directed away from the sample receiving portion. An associated apparatus is also provided.
