The invention relates to a locking device for locking a back rest of a motor vehicle seat, in particular a motor vehicle seat, comprising a catch bolt (2) which is maintained by a latching pawl in a locking position. Said latching pawl can be pivoted between a locked position and a release position, by actuating a release element (4) which is mounted in pivotable manner about a handle axis (3), in order to release the catch bolt (2). Said release element can be manually impinged upon on one end which is at a distance from the handle axis (3) in the region of an opening of a housing (1) of the locking device. Said locking element (4) is embodied in two parts and consists of a functional part (7) for pivoting the catch bolt and a handle part (8) for manual impingement.
