The present invention relates to a washing machine in which a composition is used comprising at least one liquid-liquid interface, with an interfacial tension of at least 5 mN/m. The washing machine comprises a heatable wash drum, means for storing dispensing and mixing the liquids, means for introducing the liquids into the drum, and means for filtering, separating, distilling and condensing the wash liquor and vapours and recovering the solvents. Use of the machine enables discharge of waste water with only low levels of solvent, and facilities recovering of the solvents.

The invention relates to a cleaning composition suitable for manually cleaning substrates. The composition comprises at least two immiscible liquid phases having one liquid-liquid interface with an interfacial tension of more than 5mN/m, the difference in density between the two liquid phases being not more than 0.2g/cc. After agitation, the composition is applied to the substrate to be cleaned, and subsequently friction is applied to the substrate. The composition provides for the required stability after agitation, and gives good detergency, particularly as regards particulate soil.

The invention relates to a cleaning composition comprising an immiscible liquid system having at least one liquid-liquid interface with an interfacial tension greater than 5mN/m. The less polar solvent in the system has a carbon chain length of at least 4, preferably greater than 6, or is a silicone with more than 3 SiO units. Typical examples of suitable less polar solvents are hydrocarbons, fluoroethers, polydimethylsiloxanes and fatty acid methyl esters. The more polar liquid in the system is preferably water. The composition is particularly suitable for cleaning soiled fabric, especially to remove particulate soil therefrom.

The invention relates to rinse treatment compositions that may be used to reduce residual surfactant from water that has been utilised for washing or rinsing fabrics. It has been found that rinse treatment compositions generally have the following problems: (i) turbid appearance; (ii) comparatively lower stability, especially at elevated temperature; (iii) phase separation, particularly, a floating oily layer; and, (iv) comparatively poor performance to provide an acceptable level of foam reduction. We have determined that some or all of the problems may be overcome or ameliorated by using selected silicones in particular rinse treatment compositions. The invention provides an aqueous rinse treatment composition having pH less than 7, the composition comprising: (i) a cationic compound; (ii) an amino functional polydimethylsiloxane; (iii) a non-ionic surfactant; (iv)an organic acid; and, (v) a rheology modifier.
