    Abstract: A process for the production of a ceramic article, the process comprises the steps of: (a) preparing a particulate mixture; (b) contacting the particulate mixture to water to form a humidified mixture; (c) pressing the humidified mixture to form a green article; (d) optionally, subjecting the green article to an initial drying step; (e) optionally, glazing the green article to form a glazed green article; (f) subjecting the green article to a heat treatment step in a kiln to form a hot fused article; and (g) cooling the hot fused article to form a glazed ceramic article, wherein the particulate mixture comprises from 30wt% to 80wt% recycled aluminium silicate material, wherein the particulate mixture has a particle size distribution such that: (i) the d 50 particle size of from 10μm to 30μm; (ii) the d 70 particle size of less than 40μm; and (iii) the d 98 particle size of less than 60μm, wherein steps (c) and (f), and optionally steps (d) and (e) are continuous process steps.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to a process for making a refractory article, the process comprises the steps of: (a) preparing a particulate refractory mixture by: (I) obtaining coal combustion fly ash having a bimodal particle size distribution such that: (i) the smaller peak is in the range of from greater than 32μm to 75μm; and (ii) the larger peak is in the range of from greater than 90μm to 250μm; and (II) contacting the coal combustion fly ash with binder and/or water, wherein the particulate refractory mixture comprises: (i) from 90wt% to 99wt% coal combustion fly ash (I); and (ii) from 1wt% to 10wt% binder and/or water (II); (b) optionally, contacting the particulate refractory mixture to water; (c) pressing the particulate refractory mixture to form a green article; (d) optionally, subjecting the green article to an initial drying step; (e) subjecting the green article to a firing step in a kiln to form a hot article; and (f) cooling the hot article to form a refractory article.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to a process for preparing whitened fly ash, wherein the process comprises the steps of: (a) subjecting fly ash to a size classification step to obtain size classified fly ash having a particle size such that at least 90wt% has a particle size of from 44µm to 250µm; (b) optionally, contacting the size classified fly ash from step (a) with water so as to form a slurry, wherein the slurry has a solid content of less than 40wt%; (c) subjecting the slurry obtained in step (b) to an exhaustive magnetic separation step to form magnetically treated fly ash, wherein the exhaustive magnetic separation step comprises a first magnetic extraction step and a second magnetic extraction step, wherein the second magnetic extraction step is carried out at a higher magnetic field strength than the first magnetic extraction step; and (d) subjecting the magnetically treated fly ash obtained in step (c) to a milling step to form whitened fly ash.
