摘要: A catheter system for use during biliary procedures, including a first elongate member carrying a guidewire lumen, and a channel extending longitudinally along the member wich provides access to the guidewire lumen and defines two edge surfaces. A second elongate member is also included which is disposed within the guidewire lumen and mates with the cross-sectional profile of the guidewire lumen of the first elongate member, thereby converting a guidewire lumen having a C-shaped design into one having an O-shaped design. The catheter may be used in rapid exchange catheter procedures requiring the use of small diameter guidewires which would otherwise slip out of the channel during use.

摘要: The invention relates to new flow-through cell culturing devices (110) that include plates (112) arranged in parallel and spaced to control the flow patterns and velocity of liquid medium flowing between the plates (112). The devices can also include gas-permeable, liquid impermeable membranes arranged between the plates. The devices can be used to culture cells, such as hepatocytes, at high levels of mass transport of nutrients, oxygen, and waste products, yet low levels of shear stress for extended periods of time and with high levels of cell function, e.g., in organ assist systems. The invention also includes new culturing plates for use in the devices, and methods of manufacturing these plates.

摘要: An organ support system and method adapted for use with a patient (200) and designed to modify the blood from the patient includes a control system (410), a venous line (2) coupled to an output of a patient, an arterial line (3) coupled to an input of the patient, and a cell line inserted into a hollow fiber cartridge (1) to form an organ assist device. Blood is passed through the organ assist device (1). A small flow is extracted from the extra-capillary space to check the integrity of the organ assist device. With this closed loop arrangement (110), a proper fluid balance can be maintained for the patient without requiring any dialysate, and leaks from the cell line to the patient can be immediately detected and prevented from reaching the patient.

摘要: Adjunct materials for delivery to liver tissue are provided. In general, the adjunct materials can be configured to be delivered to tissue by deployment of staples from a cartridge body of a surgical stapler. The adjunct material is configured to transition from an unexpanded configuration to an expanded configuration after delivery thereof to the liver tissue. The adjunct material can include an effective amount of one or more medicants, such as a hemostatic agent or a tissue healing agent, disposed within and releasable from the adjunct material for delivery to the liver tissue. The adjunct material can expand to apply pressure to liver tissue to facilitate sealing of one or more fractures in the stapled liver tissue. Methods of using a staple cartridge assembly or an end effector to apply such adjunct materials to liver tissue are also provided.

摘要: A method and system for treating Hepatitis C includes using an implantable pump and an outlet catheter. A proximal end of the outlet catheter is fluidly connected to an outlet port of the pump. A distal end of the outlet catheter is sized to deliver medication from the pump to a liver of living organism, preferably a human being. By delivering medication directly to the liver the effects of the antiviral therapeutics are enhanced, and the impact of Hepatitis C infection is reduced.

摘要: A perfusion system for non-surgically perfusing an organ, particularly the liver, (101) in a patient, comprising bypass catheter means being percutaneously introducible into blood vessels of the organ and devised to bypass the blood flow past the organ; perfusion catheter means being percutaneously introducible into blood vessels and being devised to lead the flow of perfusion fluid through the organ; and occlusive seals (106, 108) devised to separate the bypass and perfusion circuits; a pump apparatus comprising a bypass pump (126), a perfusion pump (124) and means (134) for establishing a negative relative pressure at the perfusion outlet from the organ; and a perfusion control apparatus (128) devised to control the pump apparatus such that the outflow of fluid from the organ exceeds the inflow of fluid into the organ in the perfusion circuit due to a net volume contribution of blood from the systemic circulation entering the isolated organ.
