Customizable methods of protecting select regions of a light metal or alloy workpiece, such as a wheel (10), from corrosion are provided. The light metal or alloy may be magnesium, aluminum, or titanium. A first region (50) of the exposed surface (40) is identified that has increased exposure to corrosive agents in an external environment (in service conditions) as compared to a second region (52). Thus, a corrosion resistant coating is selectively formed over the first region (50) of the exposed surface (40). The second region (52) may have a second distinct corrosion resistant coating. Methods for selectively and efficiently forming such corrosion resistant systems are provided. In certain methods, the locations where the corrosion resistant coating is applied are controlled by immersing only select portions of or selectively masking the workpiece in a micro-arc oxidation electrolyte bath. In other methods, the thicknesses of the coatings are locally tailored by controlling the electric field.

A cast wheel having an alloy substrate includes a primary surface and a secondary surface. A first polymeric coating is applied to the primary surface and to the secondary surface sealing the cast alloy wheel within the first polymeric coating. An intermediate polymeric coating is applied over the first polymeric coating. The intermediate polymeric coating is coated with metal using plasma deposition with the metal being esthetically distinguishable from the first polymeric coating. A second polymeric coating is applied over the metal. The second polymeric coating and the metal from the primary surface of the cast alloy wheel are removed aesthetically distinguishing the primary surface from the secondary surface. A third polymeric coating is applied over the primary surface and the secondary surface.

The wheel includes a rotationally stationary inner component (75) connectable to the bicycle, a rotatable outer hoop (76), a ground engaging tread (47) disposed on the outer hoop, and bearings (80) mounted on the inner component to be rotationally stationary therewith. The bearings are positioned around inner component at particularly selected locations to achieve high wheel performance.
