Es sind ein Verfahren und eine Vorrichtung (1) zur Handhabung von auf Rollen (5) aufgewickeltem und als Verpackungsmaterial zur Verpackung von Stückgütern, Gebinden oder dergleichen Artikelzusammenstellungen dienendem Flach- und/oder Folienmaterial offenbart. Es werden zumindest näherungsweise vollständig abgewickelte und/oder aufgebrauchte Rollen (5) zur Aufrechterhaltung eines Verpackungsbetriebes abwechselnd aus wenigstens einer Einbauposition (EB1; EB2) einer Verpackungsmaschine (3) entnommen und hierauf jeweils eine neue Rolle (5) mit Flach- und/oder Folienmaterial in die jeweilige Einbauposition eingesetzt. Nach jeweiligem Einsetzen wird eine außen liegende Lage (15) der jeweiligen neuen Rolle (5) im Bereich ihres freien Endes abgezogen und zur Bildung einer ununterbrochenen Materialbahn mit einem Abschnitt einer in der Verpackungsmaschine (3) geführten Materialbahn einer weiteren Rolle (5) verbunden. Während des Einsetzens einer neuen Rolle (5) und während des Verbindens ist das Flach- und/oder Folienmaterial der weiteren Rolle (5) noch nicht vollständig aufgebraucht, so dass zum kontinuierlichen Verpackungsbetrieb Flach- und/oder Folienmaterial unterbrechungsfrei von mindestens einer Rolle (5) der Einbauposition (EB1; EB2) abgewickelt wird. Weiter werden zumindest näherungsweise vollständig abgewickelte und/oder aufgebrachte Rollen (5) vorzugsweise sensorisch erkannt und mittels einer Handhabungseinrichtung (7) durch neue Rollen (5) mit Flach- und/oder Folienmaterial selbständig ersetzt.
