Abstract:
A method for using tension control adjustments on a web to reduce registration errors while printing multiple copies of a print job on the web comprises providing a printing system with a print station one or more rollers adapted to receive tension control commands. The tension control commands operate on the rollers to control the amount of tension in the web. The printing system is used to print a first copy of the print job. A plurality of registration errors produced during the printing of the first copy of the print job is determined. First tension control adjustments based on the plurality of registration errors are used to adjust the tension control commands to the rollers in the printing system for printing a second copy of the print job, thereby reducing registration errors.
Abstract:
Approaches for enhancing web position determination involve phase locking a web movement encoder signal to a sensed web fiducial signal. Fiducials disposed along a longitudinal axis of a substrate are sensed and corresponding sensor signals are generated. An estimated web position is provided by one or more encoder signals. The phase difference between the sensor signals and the encoder signals is calculated and the web position error is determined based on the phase difference. The web position error signal can be fed back to adjust the encoder signals which improves the accuracy of the web position determination.
Abstract:
Methods and systems for determining longitudinal position of an elongated web are described. Sensors are used to detect one or more substantially continuous fiducial marks disposed longitudinally on the web. The sensors generate signals associated with the fiducial marks. A position detector receives the signals and determines a longitudinal position of the web using the sensor signals. The fiducial marks may be periodic fiducial marks, such as sine and/or cosine marks on the web and/or may be piecewise continuous marks. The coarse longitudinal position of the web can be determined based on periodically recurring features of the fiducial marks. The fine longitudinal position can be determined based on continuous portions of the fiducial marks between the periodically recurring features.

Systems and methods for providing registration control in connection with a web converting manufacturing process such as that used for manufacturing disposable absorbent garments. Some of the disclosed embodiments include relating inspection data, such as product (or process) attribute data, to data from other manufacturing-related systems. Also disclosed are systems and methods for linking product (or process) attribute data obtained during the manufacturing process with one or more data sources including raw material data (1122), process setting data, product quality data, and/or productivity data. Also disclosed are systems and methods for identifying manufacturing set point changes and automatically implementing such changes and automated web steering changes based on data from one or more inspection systems (1104).
Abstract:
The invention relates to a method for controlling a circumferential register in a web-fed rotary press, according to which an actual value pertaining to a tension (51-55) of a web (03) passing through the printing units (04, 06, 07, 08) is determined, and an angular position and/or an angular velocity of a cylinder (12, 16) of a first printing unit (04) with regard to a cylinder of a second printing unit (06) is changed according to this determined tension. The correction of a register offset ensues without controlling the tension (51-55) and without the use of an optical recognition system by determining the value of the necessary change for the angular position ( DELTA phi ) and/or the angular velocity ( DELTA phi ) as a function of the measured tension (51-55) of the web (03).
Abstract:
Abstract:
A packet with a foil inner element is enhanced by the provision of printed images (111) on the removable upper part (112) of a foil inner liner (100). This removable part of the foil liner can be used as a voucher or to bear advertising messages or the like. Apparatus for ensuring that the image (111) is registered in an accurate position on the foil comprises driving rollers (22, 23; 45, 46) driven by an electric motor (29; 48) which is controlled by signals from a processor (27; 58) which receives input signals from a photocell (25; 57) for detecting registration marks (24) on the foil (14) as it passes a predetermined position on its path to a cutter (33; 51). The phase of the foil drive mechanism, taken, for example, from the cutter roller (33; 51), is detected and compared with the signal from the photocell (25) in order to determine whether the control drive rollers (22, 23; 45, 46) are to be advanced or retarded to maintain the print in register with the cut layer.
