A flow switch used in conjunction with a fuel meter in a fuel dispenser to determine when fuel is flowing. A flow switch can only be activated if fuel is flowing through the flow path of the flow switch. If fuel is flowing as indicated by the fuel flow switch, but the meter is not registering fuel flow, there is a meter error, which may be an error internally with components of the meter and/or a pulser that generates pulse signals indicative of fuel flow. If the meter pulser is registering fuel flow, but the flow switch is not registering fuel flow, then an error exists with the flow switch. If fuel is flowing and there are no errors, both the meter and the flow switch should indicate fuel flow.

Disclosed is a dual stop valve assembly (30) for use in a cargo tank motor vehicle (10) having a flammable material stowing cargo tank (16) with an external pipe (20d) for dispensing the flammable material. The assembly (30) includes an external pipe connection section (36) for connecting the external pipe (20d) to the cargo tank (16) and has a pair of stop valves (38a, b) spaced apart and operable within the external pipe connection section (36). The assembly (30) also includes an actuator (40) for actuating opening of each of the pair of self-closing stop valves (38a, b) between a flammable material loading/unloading position and a material transport position. The external pipe connection section (36) includes a break area (42) for promoting breakage of the external pipe connection section (36) along the break area (42) such that, upon breakage along the break area (42), only an amount of flammable material that is stowed within the external pipe connection section (36) and between the pair of stop valves (38a, b) is discharged. A flexible tension element (81, 83, 781, 883, 983) is provided between first and second fittings (29, 31, 61, 161, 261, 961) on the hose, the fittings being separated by at least two meters (six feet), the tension element substantially eliminating stretching of the delivery hose between the fittings. The tension element substantially reduces damage to the hose and to surrounding persons and objects when the hose is pulled and released as in a drive-away from a gasoline dispenser.

A method of and apparatus for filling a volatile liquid into at least one tank (10) of a multi-tank installation having a vent-pipe (11A, 11B... 11F) associated with each tank, all of the vent-pipes being connected to a common vent manifold (13) through respective over-pressure valves (12A, 12B... 12F). A vapour extraction manifold (16) is also connected to each over-pressure valve (12A, 12B... 12F) and during a tank filling operation is coupled to a vapour extraction mechanism. Both the vent manifold (13) and the extraction manifold (16) are provided with pressure sensitive valves (15, 19) respectively to allow air to enter the manifolds from the ambient when the pressure within the respective manifold falls below atmospheric. On filling any one of the tanks (10), the gas displaced from that tank is distributed amongst all of the tanks until the pressure within all of the tanks reaches some pre-determined value whereafter the valve (12) associated with the tank (10) being filled operates to connect that tank's vent-pipe (11) to the extraction manifold (16).
